Tho presence of so many armed Ja

tho whlto employes caused consldr
ablo excitement. Ono Japaneso called
on Mrs. Fuller and told her that her
hunband had been killed and that the
laborers would como to tho house and
kill her.
A gentleman connected with the
plantation gives it ns his opinion that
tho troublo Is tho result of tho convic
tion of a Japaneso In tho pollco court
hero last week of assault upon Mr.
Fuller. That Japaneso belonged to the
camp at 20 miles where all the trouble
originated; tho men there ara from the
Interior of Japan and are unaccustom

Sun Francisco, l'eb. 9. "In my
Judgment," said Kaho Otanl, tho com
mercial envoy or Japan, "tho United
States Is today the most powerful of
all tho countries on the faco of the
globe, and It Is destined to go on with
tremendous strides." This opinion ho
expressed In nn after-dinner speoch
made at tho Pacific-Union Club on
Wednesday night.
He said, further, that all Km ope Is
In a silent ferment of commercial un
rent, due to the dread of International
troublo on tho Continent. Tho United
States Is commercially sectiro and
financially powerful. Europo controls
America's telegraphic communication
with tho Orient. A war in Europe
would cut this country off from Buch
communication with Japan and China.
A Pacific cable from San Francisco to
Yokohama Is tho logical solution, de
clared Otnnl. Ho said that Japan will
gladly pay half tho cost, and he knew
that much of her commerce would fol
low tho cable, as Japan is nenring tho
tlmo when It is physically unablo to
produce enough foodstuffs for Its popu
lation. Ho asserted that In America
thoro Is business security and confi
dence, along with wealth. Otanl and
hin two secretaries return to Japan
today. Ho Is president of the Chamber
of Commerce of Yokohama and n mer
chant prince.
