It Is said that there has been some
friction between Uear Admiral Watson
nnil officers of his licet. Commander
E. I). Taussig was summarily detached
from the command of the Hcnnlngton
and ordcrcil homo for nlleged criticism
of tho coininnndcr-ln-clilef, though It Is
said that Commander Taussig was not
Insubordinate. There has also been
friction between tho rear admiral and
the Bureau ot Navigation relative to
his cnlcf of stalT.
Bear Admiral Watson some months

to act as his chief ot staff and assigned
him to duty ,but tno department dis
approved his action. Only recently the
department ordered Captain Charles
M. Thomas to command tho Brooklyn.
Hear Admiral Watson transferred Cap
tain Jomes W. Forsyth from tho Bal
timore to the Brooklyn and It is said,
gave an explanation of his action In
compliance with a request made by the
Tho bachelor officers of the fleet have
also complained because the married
officers whose wives wcro In Manila
were allowed to remain on shore; with
out procuring permission from tho
commandcr-Iu-chlef, one or two nights
a week, while the order of the1 Hear
Admiral required the younger uhma'r
rlcd men to be on their ships after 8
or 9 o'clock at night, and not to ro
main on shoro without written permis
Hear Admiral Watson's health was
such that ho was temporarily rcjlcvcd

though the fact was not made public
Tho Baltimore will probably return
homo under the command of Ca'ptnln
Q. F. F. Wilde, who now commands tho
Oregon, nnd who has been two years
on the Asiatic station. Captain
Thomas will probably be transferred
to tho Brooklyn and Captain Forsyth
to the Oregon. Officers whoso tours of
duty at sea aro about expiring will bo
brought home In tho Baltimore.
These changes will not bo determined
upon until Hear Admiral Hemy reaches
Hear Admiral Remy, successor to
Hear Admiral Watson was selected by
the department because of his ?wcll
known ability and particularly because
of his work at Key West during1 the
war with Spain. Though senior to
Hear Admiral Sampson ho accepted
without protest tho order of tho de
partment assigning him to command
tho naval baso at Key West and plac
ing him under that officer s command.
The department has never forgot
ten his subordination and Secretary
Long has been anxious for an oppor
tunity to show his appreciation. Rear
Admiral Hemy applied some monthB
ago for tho command of tho Asiatic
Btatlon so that orders Issued today 'will
meet with his wishes. 1
Hear Admiral Watson's dispatch to
European waters led to tno rumors
that the European station was td be
reestablished, but Secretary Long said
the report was erroneous. Tho Secre
tary has not determined who will suc
ceed near Admiral Cromwell, as presi
dent of the retiring board but Rear Ad
miral E. F. Day, a member of the
board will act as president pcndlng'the
