San Francisco. Marcb 21. Under a
moonlit sky, with a gentlo breeze blow
ing and with no premoultlon of danger.
tho British ship City of Florence,
bound to this port from Iqulque with a
cargo of niter, went to her doom on
Montara reef, In Half moon bay, thirty
seven miles down the coast, Monday
night.
It was 9:30 o'clock, and Captain
Stone, Third Mate William Thompson
and tho Ballmaker wero on deck when,
tho ship struck. Although tho vessel
was making only four knots an hour,
tho Impact was so strong that tho men
wero thrown to tho deck. After the
first recoil tho ship again Btruck tho
reef and was carried bodily over tho
submerged ledgo. The ship Btruck a
third time, this time a broadsldo blow,
moro terrifying than tho others, anil
all hands knew that tho ship was lost.
The crew were landed safely.
