shipping interests. Tho proposed
legislation will benefit a small num
ber of tho old foreign steamers which

shipping as may choose to take advan

ports. Tho American-Hawaiian Steam
ship Company Is now constructing, and
will shortly launch, nt American ship
yards four steel steamers of 8,000 tons
each, and nro nbout to contract for
other steamers for this trade. They
represent a value of $2,000,000 nnd wcro
built expressly for tho Hawaiian trade,
Tho Oceanic Steamship Company of
San Frnnclsco has nlso been Increasing
its service nnd will soon launch three
steamors of 9,000 tons for tho same sor
