I.'ditor Evening Uultetln: Will you
kindly allow mu spaco in your papor
for these few lines, as I do not think It
umlss to put myself on record bcfoio
the would-be contending political
party or parties and tho public In gen
eral. After Wednesday night's Repub
lican iimB3 mccctlng was held at tho
Di 111 Shed, I was Informed by a num
ber who wtro pns:nt that a good
friend of mlno, W. 13. Fisher, nominat
ed mo as one of tho delegates for tho
district of Kcwalo, and that on tho
vote I was declared elected, but upon
tha declaration of S. M. Halloa that 1
wa3 n Democrat It appears my namo
was struck out of tho list.
Now comes tho question. I would
like to know by what right did Mr.
Hallow stato at that meeting, from tho
platform, thnt I was n Democrat unlcs3
ho was absolutely suro of being cor
rect. If he had stated that I was a
Royalist ho would have been correct,
ns I havo been born one, and am still
as all born llrltlshcrs arc. Dut tho
transition of tho government and Its
politics from a monarchical to n re
publican form Is something Into which
nil good Royalists will havo to bu
Initiated and educated, ns to tho mvs
tcrlcs of American politics of which
they ought to know something btfutv
taking sides therein.
It 13 a well known fact that In the
question of votes on these Islands tho
Royalists aio In a majority by far
over flvo to one and I bellevo It Is tho
duty of tho contending parties to get
Into their rcspectivo folds as much
of the Royalist voto as they can for
controlling elections, city governments,
etc. Tho action of some of thoso at
said meeting did not show that spirit
and It, ns I bcllove, Is a fatal mistake.
It the Republican pnrty of the Ter
ritory of Hawaii Intends to control
politics on tlicao Islands, their first
duty Is to Invito nil residents nnd citi
zens Into their camp nnd make good
Republicans of them nil Royalists,
Liberals, Populists and Democrats.
For this reason, as I believe, that tho
futuro prosperity of these Islands lies
within tho lines of policy carried out
by tho present Republican party in
power with William McKlnley as
