tion of Ah Hip, the Chinese merchant

street, there might have been n riot In
lllln last Sunday afternoon. The
trouble began on Saturday night when
Ofllccr Peter Ulcmakulo attempted to
arrest one cf tho clerks In Ah Uolt'3
store for riding a bicycle without a

waa riding up nnd down In front of the
store shoitly after 9 o'clock. Peter
Elcmnkulo rushed up and pulled him
off the wheel nnd was going to arrest
him, but when the young man stated
that ho was not doing anything that
endangered tho lives or people, he let
him off and took tho wheel to tho sta
tion houBe. Some one thero twitted
him about taking tho wheel nnd not
tho man so ho returned and found thn
clerk sitting on a box In front of the
store nnd Immediately grabbed him
hv the neck. Tone On. a man connect
ed with tho store, remonstrated with
tho ofllccr who Immediately directed
his effort to him, striking him a blow
In the face. Thero was a sculuo and a
crowd gathered. Clerk Lyman of tho
sncrlff's omco was In tho vicinity nnd
seeing the crowd rushed Into It nnd
took hold of Tong On nnd while hold
ing him struck him thrco times In the
face. Peter Clcmakulo took hold of the
offending clerk who had been guilty of
riding a wheel without n light nnd a
hack was called. Tong On refused to
get In and Clerk Lyman froccd him
The arrested men were shortly nfter
wards released on ball. This affair
ancercd tho Chlncso somewhat and
they occnnio thorougnly aroused by tho
occurrences or the next day. tor on
Sunday afternoon, William Kcolanul,
nlcht clerk nt tho station house, nc
companlcd by Ofllccr Peter Clcmakule,
entered the premises of a Chlncso inun
dryman on Kront street near Church
to see If nnyono was gambling theio or
smoking opium. Tho Chlncso objected
and asked their business there. Tho
ofllccrs finding no lawful reason to glvo
demanded that tho Chlncso bIiow their
tnx receipts. This the Chlncso refused
to do on the grounds that theso special
officers had no right to make tho de
mand and especially on Sunday. Hot
words followed nnd n fight ensued In
which tho ofllccrs were roughly hand
led. Tho proprietor of the laundry
blew a police whistle nnd Norman Ly
man rusned in nnd told tho Chlncso to
yield. Tho men were arrested and tak
en to the station house. Herald.
