pox Is preeminently a disease of child
hood, it is known thnt, during tho pres
ent 'widespread epidemic of modified
sumllpox in the Stnto of Illinois ami

occutring In both early and late ndult

"In conclusion, tho State Board of
Health desires to emphasize the neces
sity for the observation of tho most
stringent precautions In every case of

sembling chicken pox or smallpox. Tho
failure of a physician to readily recog
nize small pox, or n neglect to recom
mend the ndoptlon of cxtraotdlnary
care In nil cases of a suspicious nature,
may at any time cause tho beginning
of nn outliienk In a community, en
tailing much sickness and loss of life,
interruption to travel nnd depression
of business, nnd a financial loss Impos
sible to estimate. Tho most rigid
quarantine and Isolation Is recommend
ed In every case concerning which
there Is the slightest uncertainty, nnd
the maintenance of such until nil
doubts arc set aside. Especially should
n varlcella-llko eruption Injtn ndult be
regarded with grent suspicion. It may
not be small pox; It Is extremely un
likely to be chicken pox."

"The observation of tho Marine Hos
pital Bureau has been that In tho ma
jority of mistaken diagnoses with re
gard to smallpox tho disease has been
called chicken pox. This Is moro strict
ly n disease of children, affecting es
pecially those under six years of age.
Chicken pox Is n contagious disease,
and many local health authorities re
quire Its Isolation. Particularly when
smallpox Is prevalent, nny case of sup
posed chicken pox should bo Isolated
and guarded as It It wore smallpox, at
least until the diagnosis Is proved be
Smallpox has prevailed throughout
t.ic Northern, Middle and Southern
States for tho past year. In each of sev
eral fully a thousand cases being re
ported In single months.
David Dayton, a former president ot
the Hawaiian Board of Health, and

ported yesterday as on board tho trans

personally, with Dr. Wood, president
of tho Board of Health. After discov
ery tho case was held under observa
tion for a whole day, and there was no
doubt, finally, that It was one of tho ex
ceptional cases in which an adult con
tracts chicken pox.

A Japanese, aged 20 years, commit
ted suicide Sunday, In a room over tho
Chinese grocery nt the corner of King
nnd Punchbowl streets by cutting his
throat with a razor. Another Japnn-
eso was in tho room at tho time but
did not know of tho deed until tho fel
low was about dead. No cause can bo
found. Deceased was a new nrrlval
and had been suffering from malarial
fover. Tho Coroner's Jury will meet
