BOERS WERE ROUTED
London, May 11. A dispatch from
licit Spruit dated May 10, says Ora
cral Hamilton's scouts had on two pre
vious days ascertained tho Boers' po
sition and strength. On Wcdncsdoy
night tho Cheshire Regiment crossed
the river, entrenched themselves and
prepared to hold tho passage for tho
regiments following.
"At daybreak on Thursday the main
body crossed at two or three points.
Tho mounted Infantry was then In ac
tion driving off tho advance Doers pre
paratory to a general forward move
ment. "The lloer right first gave way, hut
Tucker nnd Hamilton had a rougher
task on tho left. Tho Doers had six
guns and served them well, working
with great determination but tho Brit
ish worked up closer and closer, their
guns meanwhile firing Incessantly.
"Tho Cast Lancashlro nnd Sussex
Regiments by 11 o'clock had worked
well to tho front. Tho order was giv
en and ltko u flash tho two regiments
sprang forward simultaneously and in
a few minutes hnd secured two com
manding ridges. Tho ndvanccd lino
was now within 1200 yards of tho
Doers' main trench and the latter were
already losing heart from tho demon
stration on their flank, but they kept
up a rapid, though wild Arc.
"At this moment the final charge was
ordered nnd away went the Uancashtrcs
and tho Sussex Regiments again, but
tho Boers could not stand and they
fairly bolted and tho rout of tho Doers
along the whole line was then com
plete." Princeton and California
Princeton, N. J., May 11. The mem
bers of tho University track team who
will compcto with tho California men
in tho dtinl meet on Saturday morning
are bending every energy to win tho
contest. Both teams have been hard
nt work every day this wecek nnd all
the contestants appear to bo In fine
condition, it is tho opinion nraoiiK
tho undergraduates that the meet will
bo very closely contested by both
teams.
Captain Crcgan, when Interviewed
said:
"Tho meet will certainly bo very
closely contested. Wo ought to prove
better than tho California men In tho
sprints nnd tllstanco events, but they
will hnvo everything In the field events
practically their own way. If Jarvls,
who has been disabled with nn In
jured nnkle, Is unable to enter moro
than tho 100 yard dash, tho chances
for winning the meet arc against us."
Tho n8ssoclatlon will present a hand
some banner to the team winning tho
largest number of points and the point
winners will each receive medals. Only
those winning first place will gain
points.
