CIRCULAR PliOtt THE JESUITS.
Manila, April 1C (Correspondence
of tho Associated Press.) The moit
sensational of the events of tho past
week has been tho general distribution
by tho Jesuits of a pamphlet In which
Is set forth tho "truths which Chris
timid must unserve. " Sonic of tho
things most stiongly condemned by tho
1 Jesuits In this pamphlet nro thoso
which tho American Uuvcrntnent has
pledged Itself to carry out; notably re- '
1 llglous tolerance nnd the recognition of
civil marriage. Consequently this act
or 1110 jesuns is cousiueicu uy many to
bo an attack upon tho American Ad
ministration, '1 ho pamphlet In ques
(1.) 'the comamnds ot tho church
1 must be obeyed In tho same manner ns
the law of Cod.
(2.) You must subject your own
judgment to that ot tho church and
think exactly as tho church thinks, for
tho church cannot bo overcome.
(3.) You must reject nnd condemn
, tho Masonic sect, so frequently rejected
and condemned by tho Supremo Pon
tiffs. (I.) You must also reject nnd con
demn liberty of wuishlp, llbetly of tho
press, liberty of thought, and tho other
liberties of perdition.
(G.) You must also reject and con
demn liberalism, nnd nlso modern
progress nnd civilization as being false
progress and false civilization.
(G.) You must utterly abominnto
civil ninrrlnge nnd regiud It as pure
(7.) ou must nlso condemn nnd re
ject the Interference of tho civil au
thorities in any ecclesiastical affairs,
so much in vogue nowadays.
(8.) Finally, you must hold tho be
lief that tho church by Its origin has n
divine nnd supernatural authority and
is, moreover, supeilor to the civil au
thorities. And reject and condemn tho
doctrine that the church should sub
mit to the Stnte. or that tho church Is
1 Independent or ought to separate itself
irom the State. Children must be
brought up In tho abovo views, con
demning whatever tho clitirc condemns.
And children must bo educated solely
In Catholic schools by genuinely Cnth
olic teachers and not on any account In
unsrctnrihn or mixed schools, which
nrt strictly forbidden by the church.
The foregoing commands nro hacked
I up by many quotations from the lllble,
encycllcnls, synllnbl nnd letters from
different l'opis. This pamphlet was
issued without duly expressed church
authority, and until tho organ of tho
Roman Catholic church In Mpnl'a a
Spanish newspaper called tho Llbcrtas,
admitted the fact that tlio Jesuits bad
published, and with every right, tho
pamphlet In question considerable
dsubt was entertained as to Its authen
ticity. SEATTLE UEHK.
