SUMMER IN MANILA.
Manila, P. I April C With tho ap
proach of this year's hot weather,
which comes to Manila every April,
May and June, tho vessels of tho Unit
ed States navy have been slipping away
to the cooler parts of China and Ja
pan. It Is a mighty pleasant thing
to thus get nwny from tho Philippines
during tho heat ot tho summer and
such a chango for thrco months will
greatly benellt tho whole ship's com
pany. This consideration of tho health
of his men was a strong factor in de
ciding Admiral Watson to order several
of tho ships from this station to spend
the summer between Yokohama and
Hongkong.
It Is a pity tho army cannot get thin
chnnge. Persistent work tells on a man
out hero and wo Americans Imvo not
yet learned tho Oriental habits of slow
ness in business and naps during tbu
heat of tho day. It is estimated that on
nn averago tho American out here docj
one-half of tho work ho would do at
homo under tho Bamo circumstanced
and every ono knows It is Just twice as
hard to accomplish this half. Army
officers can only get cli.s chango to the
cooler climate of China and Japan by
obtaining sick leave, but it comes to
many of our naval ofllcors as a part ot
their duties.
