That Fish Story.
Men along the water front are having a
let offun over the Walklkl shark and eel
yarn that appeared In the Advertiser this
morning. Thev are wondering If the1 re
porter was stuffed bv the same man that,
years ago told tt e newspaper novice along
the water ftont that a certain ve.el
br.iught a cirgo of copper lined post holes.
ltUII be remembered this "cargo" was
published. I he water front people s ly
tlut th: story mlgjit have been foisted on
the unsuspecting public Ind the reported
let the eel out when the spear struck. The
leap Into the boat was too much.
At Uont Landing.
When Governor Dole came ashnre from
the Protet uslerdav he found the shore
boats strung alnnz the whole distance of
(the s'eps leading djwn to the water. The

It was not verv lone afte Governor Doles
departure from the wharf that an order
was received at the landing to keep cletr
forboVs from various vessels a space of
about twenty feet. The boys lmmedilely
sunk a post In the silt mud and now all
coats must Keep maukj of this.
WHY hi: refused.
A good story Is told about .Mr. Cro

power in one of the New York Irish
wards. Donahue was from the "mild
soil," and Mr. Crokcr Invited him to
dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. Kiar-

If allowed to order from the French
menu card, Mr. Crokcr volunteered to
order the dinner, and advised Pat tn
follow suit and say nothing. A waiter
tumbled over himself in his endeavor
to be the first to wait upon Mr. Crokpr.
and the political magnate said: "Well,
rat, I think we 11 start of with a cock-
tall." Pat hemmed and hawed bit his
lip In vexation that he should bo forced
to object to his host's first order, but
finally screwing up his courage to the
point of speech, blurted out: "It ye
have no objection, Mr. Crokcr, and as
I'm not fond of that part of the chicken
as goes over the fence last, I'll take
part or the brlst."
