"1 he purport of my letter Is to ac
quaint ou as fully as possible with the
extensive fields of Ice met by us on
March IS, 130 miles from Yezo Island,
Japan. To give J on a thorough outline
of this most unusual and unlooked-for

reads its follows- 'Floating Ice has lit
tle or no Influence upon the limitation
of the North Pacific Ocean, Its northern
border being practically free from Ice,
except possibly a rare fragment formed
In some narrow passage, or drifted
south by some severe winter gale, the
southern portion (of Ilerlng Sen) nlong
the Aleutian Islands being rarely. If
ccr, troubled by Ice.'
"At 2 a. in of the 18th inst. (March,
1900.) a loely bright moon nt the time,
field Ice wns obscned to the northwnrl
of the steamer's position, which w.ib
then latitude 42 degrees 30 minutes N
longitude 140 deg. 18 mln. E. The en
gines were at onre put to dead slow
and stopped. Shortly nfter Held Ice was

see. At 2' 40 a. m. the steamer enter
ed the first of the Ice at what appeared
to be the narrowest part, no opening

wenther; a great amount of drift Ice
during the whole day; In the morning
increasing wind nnd sea.
"February 28, noon, Mnroran Harbor,
Japan, little Ice In the afternoon; later
on free of Ice. Stormy weather with
heavy snow squalls, decreasing In the
forenoon. After arrival at Mororan
fine nnd clear weather."
The two reports, although differing
by nearly a month In date, thus place
the Held In npproxlmntel) the same po
sition, from which fnct It may be In
ferred either that the Ice wns station

passed through 80 miles ot this field
and were thirteen hours In It.
"At S p. m when passing through
this Ice, somewhat lurger pieces tbtu

and the bluff of each bow, but with no

"When the last of this Ice was seen
Cape Yerlmo, Yezo Island, boro north
76 deg west (true,) distant 49 miles.
"On our arrival here we found

Inches of Ice We lay nt anchor for
eight hours while a dock 350 feet by
10 feet was being cut out nf the ice for
us to enter, and we aro now discharging
our cargo on the lee, the same bcln,!
