Now that so much attention Is directed
to the coal problem In the United Klrgdom,
It Is Interesting to note what are the possi
bilities of some of our Colonies for sup
plying the needs of large consumers who
have hitherto been accutomed to draw a
large proportion of their st-pplles from
home sources. At the meeting of the J'tn
Insular and Oriental Steamship Company,
held last month, S'r Thomas Sutherland,
M. P., said, that last year two-fifths of the
company's coal supply were obtained from
the Far Eat and Australia, and he Im
agined that during the cunent year the
percentage of what might be cal.ed foreign
coal would considerably Increase. Cargoes
of Japanese coal, Sir Thomas added, can
be laid down In Bombay at the present
time at 18s. per ton as compared with 40s.
for Cardiff coal. The company have been
turning their attention to the question of
oil fuel, which, the chairman admitted,
possessed many advantages if they could
only be ture of obtaining supplies of oil, at
a fair price, at those potts where It would
be necessary to get It. In the meantime, it
is obvious that our Col, nlal friends should
lose no opportunity in developing their
resources to the utmost, ind thus be In a
position for competing on a large scale In
the coal market In the near future. British
