Ilutte. Mont., Aug. 9. Ex-Senator
Lee .Mantle, chulrmnn of the State -511-er
Republican party, today Issued a
long Utter renounilng Unit patty. He
returns to the Republican ranks. Man
tie declares that silver Is dead nnd that
greater Issues hae takiu Its place. In
the course of his letter he says: "811-
cr Is no longer the paramount Issue,
not evm with llrynn himself and much
less so with the gruit majority of his
party, i:en the delegate from Montana.
ex-Govtmor H.iuser, dicllned to vo'.e
for lfi to 1 in the Kansas City conven
tion. To my mind the paramount Issu"
today Is the Issue of maintaining th'
honor and the dignity of the Nation
nnd the supremacy of Its ilag, win -ever
It rightfully lloats.
"I shall choose to stand by my own
country rather than give aid nnd com
fort to Its enemies. The ast majority
of Sliver Republluins nre expansion
ists. This was made evident at the lnte
convention nt Kansas City nnd it Is
notably true of them on the PnctP-
Slope. As the Issues are now made up
between tho parties, expansion Is In
front nnd sliver badly In the rear."
"Theie Is absolutely no lelatlon l-
twien the two Issues nnd the question
of expansion or nntl-expausinn in
comes the test In this campaign. Loy
alty to our own (lo eminent. Its honor
and Its (lag, must always be the para
mount Issue with the Ameilcnn people,
nnd In the present emergency I cannot
permit myself to doubt whete the ma
jority of them will stand. "
