Fastest Battleship
Is the Alabama
Boston, Aug. 2S. With n new broom
at the fore, signifying another speed
ifctory for Cramps, the new United
States battleship Alabama steamed Into
the harbor nt 5:30 this afternoon after
an oIDelnl trial trip over the deep water
course ft oin Thatcher's Island to Iloonc
faUnd, The eesel had steamed at nn
average, speed of seventeen lenots per
hour for consecutive hours, without
taking Into account the strong flood
tide, which, when the allowances uio
figured out properly, will probably con
tribute ft substantial addition to her
speed. The Alabama also reached a
maximum speed of IS Knots for a dis
tance of CO hnots space. When tidal
flllowanies are prepared they will
doubtless show that the latest addition
to Uncle Sam's nnvy Is the fustest bat
tleship of her tonnage afloat.
The general opinion expressed by the
naval men on the craft during her trial
trip was that her average will bo about
17.1 knots an hour for the four hours.
The contract requirement for the ship
was that she should steam sixteen
knots an hour for four consecutive
hours.
