Indians Dying Olt.
Washington, Sept. 7. The Secretary,
of the Treusury has received a des
patch from Alaska confirming the re
ports that a most deplorable condition
exists among the native Indians along
the coast from Cape Nome northward.
The Treasury officials are powerless tc
render any aid to the sufferers owing
to the fact that the department has no
available funds for such a purpose, but
General Spalding hag written a letter
to the War Department, whlcti baa a
fund that can be drawn upon in emer
gency cases llko the present, recom
mending that food he supplied and dis
tributed under the direction of the
army otllcers In charge of the troops
stationed there. The Treasury De
partment will furnish surgeons from
tho Marine Hospital service and the
customs officers will bo Instructed tn
lender any assistance possible. The
Kcd Cross Society Is becoming Inter
ested In the relief measures now being
taken and It Is not unlikely that It will
cooperate to the extent of furnishing
clothing for the destitute.
