Deep friendship expressed after n
knifing affray usually lasts until the
opportunity oilers to thrust the pollti
cat knife again.
It begins to look as though Germany
were disgruntled that the fighting In
China stopped so suddenly, consequent
ly a move Is made with a view to giv
ing Count on Wnldersco something to
do.
If Hawaii and tho Hawallans wo.-o
pledged by solemn vows to cast tho
Territory Into the bogholes of ruin,
one of the detnlls of the fulfillment
-would be the election of Wilcox to Con
gress. If Republicanism stands for any
thing It Is mandatory that every voter
and every worker hew strictly to tho
line from tho day the campaign opens
till the last ballot Is counted on elec
tion day.
Goodness knows, the Tramways com
pany Is bad enough, but the rapidity jf
the Hapld Transit construction brings
to mind of the kickers that If it were
not for "Pain's mules" the dear people
would have to walk.
Tho man who bays Honolulu streets
oro In better condition than ever be
fore must have been laboring tinder
the Impression that a good proportion
of our public driveways aspired only
to the dignified title of cowpaths.
"Keep on. You will solve your own
problem. He patient, be progressive,
be determined, bo honest, bo God-fear
ing, and you will win, for no effort falls
that has a stout, honest, earnest heart
behind It." Extract from speech of
President MeKlnley.
The average trotting speed of 2:12
made by tho Grand Circuit campaign
ers for this year would have been con
sidered nn Impossibility comparatively
few years ago, In tho days when Am
ericans havo annihilated space with
steam and electricity, it appears tint
flesh and blood can bo tuned up to a
higher concert pitch.
The news from tho late dispatches
that the remains ot the boys In blue,
who answered tho last roll call whl'o
In Hawaii, are to be removed to ilia
national cemetery ought to rouse the
citizens ot Honolulu to something
more than passing notice. The mem
mory of what these men died for
should not completely pass out of mind,
and their sacred remains ought not to
be borne from these shores without
some marked tribute of respect elthor
on the part of the citizens or tho local
military.
Aside from all national Issues tho
campaign now on Is preeminently a
business man's campaign, When op
ponents of tho Republican party
threaten to cripple tho administration
of Territorial departments tho business
man and the working man has need to
take warning of the disastrous results
that must ot necessity follow the suc
cess of such a movement, The organ
ization ot a Merchants' Republican
Club will unquestionably bo a power In
combating the reactionary forces and
in securing the election ot Republican
candidates pledged to liberal principles
and Territorial progress.
TUB STRAIGHT TICKET.
The only Republican ticket Is the
straight Republican ticket. Tbo Re
publican voter who Is true to his prin
ciples will voto for every Republican
candidate, not only' casts his own bal
lot but uses ovcry effort to secure tin
vote of every citizen nlong the same
lines. Tho Independent voter bo he the.
follower of so-called Independent or
ganization or the man who refuses to
vote for party candidates agalnRt
whom some personal prcjudlco may be
held, merely wastes his vote and sacri
fices foundation principles to a personal
whim.
Men who have the best Interests ot
the country and of this Territory at
heart will not allow personalities to In
fluenco their action. Tho mart who
allows his Integrity to principle to be
swerved by a narrow personal dlslPia
for candidates who arc pledged to and
support tho same party declarations
that he upholds cannot be firmly
grounded In his support of the causa
ho espouses. Ho Is not true to htm
self.
In the political campaign now on In
this Territory the Republican party Is
arranged against forces whose open ex
pressions, which amount practically Ip
threats, nro the espousal 'of a policy
or policies that will cripple public de
partments, check the progress of pub
lic works, In fine, turn back the clock
of Territorial progress till It stops. A
legislative deadlock with the Executive
Is the hope. In fact the campaign cry
of the Republican party opponents.
How far tho appeal to prejudice may
Influence the voting population Is nn
unknown quantity. Certain It Is that
this appeal of demagogues wUl have
Increased force and effect If the declar
ed Republicans allow themselves to be
lukewarm, Indifferent or nntagonUtlc
toward any candidate whom the party
by Its majority voto havo put before
the people.
The Republican party stands for Am
ericanism, broad-minded, liberal, pro
gressive. It believes In going forwjid,
using the past as a detail of experience
to make the future better, not as a bono
of contention to fight over, thereby
wasting their time and accomplishing
nothing. If In the estimation of any
Republican voter there nro weak men
on the ticket, the declarations of the
party strengthen them. The Interests
of tho people are not served by putting
In th cplacc of the "weak one" a candl
date ot opponents of the Republican
party standing on a platform of chaos
and pledged to creato chaos If none
exists.
The duty of the true Republican Is to
stand by his colors from first to last
giving a straight Republican vote for
a straight Republican ticket.
