"Kerosene Wnrehouse Detention
Camp" In the days of the plague would
be struck by the bright and cheery as
pect of the house uml Its surrounding'.
The sandy approach Is relieved I)'-
growing plants on the front verandaa.
The most scrupulous cleanliness and
neatness Is obscnahlo throughout the
house nnd Its surroundings. The ver
andah on the left of the entrance ll

cheerful, nlry lanal for the convalescent
women. Here Is n sewing machine, und
a small organ for religious services.
On entering the mnln building, the
olllce of the medical superintendent Is
on the right, nnd, connected with It a
storeroom for clothing, nnd a labora
tory, furnished with a bed to be used
on emergency. Knclng the entrance
with the full benefit of the mountain
breeze Is the wnrd for paralytics with
six beds. On the other side of the en
trance Is a fcninle ward and bath room,
fleyond these you como to the diet
kitchen, nnd two dining rooms', one for
the convalescents, the other for thfe
staff. Adjoining these Is thecook house
and storeroom.
Ascending the staircase, which faTj
the main entrance, the visitor will And

side of these wards nre two Inner rooms
looking out oer the ocean, one 01

There Is another largo ward In an ad
joining building with a wide verandah
much appreciated by tho patients, and
nn open space where the men can sit
and read.
On the Wnlklkl side of the hospital
aro the servants' quarters, morgue,
and laundry.
The merit of the excellent arrange
ment everywhere observable Is due tu
the medical superintendent, Dr. How
man, under whose hand the institu
tion has grown up. The management
owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. John
Emelutli, who has put in everything
connected with plumbing nnd sanitary
arrangements free of charge.
In July, the management entered Into
n contract with the United States Ma
rine Hospital Service, through Dr. Car
mlchacl, under which nil sailors In the
United States merchant service suffer
ing from pulmonary disease arriving
nt this port, will be sent to thrs hos
pital. The Institution Is being run on lines
of the strictest economy, consistent
with efficiency and proper attention.
The cost Is now from $700 to 7C0 a
month, according as there are four or
five weeks of wages to be paid. The
expenditure for August was IG99.85.
