Capt. Carey Fined
$1200 in 'Frisco
San Francisco, Sept. 26. As a result
cf bringing six passengers from Hono
lulu on the last trip. Captain Carey of
tlie steamer Moana has been fined $1200
by the customs nuthorltle. The mon
ey does not come out of his pocket,
however, as one of tho owners of the
vca.el was responsible for his having
Incurred tho penalty.
Captain Ednard T. Miles, one of the
stockholders of the Union Steamship
Line of New Zealand, spent the past
three months In Honolulu with his v. Hi
and tour children. He trails on a pass
and desired to come to this city on the
Jloann, one of the vessels In the com
pany's, fleet. When the steamer reach
ed the Hawaiian port on her way from
Sydney Captain Miles told Captain
Caiey that he desired accommodations.
Tne master of the Moana reminded him
that the Goernmcnt regulations pre
sented foreign vessels bringing passen
gers from Honolulu to this port. Cip
tain Miles decided to take n chance,
but before the steamer had started he
deposited $1200 with Captain Carey to
cover any fines that might be Imposed
Captain Miles and his family were
landed here, but a flno of $1200 was Im
posed on Captain Carey. This money
-as raid oer to Deputy Collector Je
rome at the Custom House today.
Captain Miles expects that tho Treas
ury Department will remit the entire
(Ine, or the greater part of the amount.
Ho claims that there are mitigating
circumstances, as ho Is onu of the own
ers of the Moana and travels on a paj,
the Union Company deriving no reve
nue by transporting him and his family
When tho Sierra, Sonoma and Vcr.
turn, the new sessels of the Oceanic
Llni", commenco operations between
this city and Australia, the steamer
Moarn will ho taken off the run.'ns the
t'nlon Line will no longer hold a con
tract for carrying tho malls. The Mo
ana will either resume her run betwerm
Australian and New Zealand ports or
ply between Victoria and Australia.
Captain Carey, her popular com
mander, nnd the other officers will be
niU'td by their many friends here.
Want Any War
Washington, D. C. Sept. 26. A
member of the Diplomatic Corps In
formed n reporter today that the re
cent actions of the United States re
specting China wero based solely on
tho fact that this Government has In
It'j possession Information that a foi
msl war will start in tho Far Ids'. In
tht next two months at the outside,
and the United States did no care to
ttke the risk of becoming Invohed In
It The man who communicated this
lr.foimatlon Is not nn alarmist. He be
lieves ihr administration has shown ex
cellent Judgment In getting out of tho
lngc of these great cscnts He said
' President McKinley ordered his
t'oops to withdraw from Chlnn because
tin tamo Into possession of Informit
tlcn that could not be delayed mu-li
longer. He ordered tho American war
ship' to tho Far Eastern waters be'
cmue we must have something there
to protect American Interests. I feel
absolutely suro that ho was correct
and that tho war will begin within
sixty days. I expect It much sooner
Probably It will start by a formal dec
litre Hon of war on the pnrt of Qer
rriny against China but how It will
end no living man enn tell."
CASCADE TUNNEL DONE
St. Paul, Sept. 27.-Presldent Hill of
the Great Northern has rccelted from
Chief Engineer Stevens a telegram
stating that tho East and West crews
In the Immense bore under tho Cascade
Mountains huvo met. The tuu forcta
vo!lng from nppostto ends In the big
tunnel brought the two ends together
without the variation of an inch.
Now that tho tremendous taBk of
Lo:.ng out over two miles of granite
his been accomplished, the work at
lnlng the tracks Is comparatively In
significant. Tho tunnel will now be rushed to
pertly completion. It Is estimated
tin: when finished It will have cost
.'. 000.000. Ono thousand men hao
Len engaged nearly thrco years In Its
enrrtructtan, nnd till records of tunnel
Ing have been broken. The aerage
progress was eighteen to twenty feet
The tunnel will supersede tha
"switchback" oer tho Cascades, whish
