Relief for Peary
Delayed a Year
New York, Oct. 2. Herbert L.
HiltiKeman of Brooklyn has received a
getter from Russell W. Porter of
Spilngfleld, Vt concerning the loss ot
the Peary relief schooner, the Lily of
the Noith, which was briefly reporttd
In a dispatch from St. Johns, N. P., re
cently. XIr. Porter, who was the len',
er ot tho Hunting party on the Peaty
steamship Diana In 1S99, writes:
"Captain Samuel Dartlett's sehoonr,
the Lily of the North, left Halifax July
20th, with four passengers aboard, Cor
r.ollus Hawkins, Westhall Borden of
Kail River, my niece, MUs Marsh and
myrelf. We' were Ave days getting to
Sydney. Then my niece and I left
them, returning to Boston.
"I tecclvcd a few days ago a let'er
from Hawkins, who gave out the fol
lowing news: The Lily had met
caliis, gales and head winds all tho
way down the Labrador coast and near
Naln the party began to. despair of get
ting to Jensen that summer. They
heard often tho expression, n stock say
ing among Arctic veterans that 'the
oldest Inhabitant had never seen such
a season of Ice.' So tho sportsmen
w.'pt Inland hunting nnd returning In
nlnut a week found that the Lily Ital
laid her bones a day or two previous on
Black Island, thirty miles from Nam;
had dragged her anchor In a gale and
bumped her keel off and gone to pieces,
losing most of her cargo.
"Now, just draw a picture of Jensen
malting at the Baflln land station for
heln and news of the busy world and
now his despair: another year facing
lil.tr no civilized food, no coal; In fact,
nnother year of savagery In order to
keep alive. I think his case Is now
mow pltlablo, for such n state of af
falrr should never have happened In
the first place. Hnwklns and Borden
took the mall steamer and went on to
Ramah, quite far north for tho mail
lnct to go, within ninety miles faf
Cnn Chldley nnd returned to St.
Jchr.8 on her;,"
The Jensen referred to In the letter
Is in charge of a whaling station nt
Cnpo Mercy, In Baffin Land, to which
tl'O Lily of the North was b'oipd and
he is. the only white man attached to
tho placo. Tho Peary expedition of
ISO" brought out n large amount ot
whale oil nnd bone collected by Jen
sen, who In a storm the previous win
ter nearly perished. He was brotig.'it
bjck to Boston where ho was restored,,
to health and the following summer he
returned to the whnllng station.
It Is expected that tho R. P. Rltlnj,t
nr.d W. II. Dlmond will get away for
San Francisco on Thursday.
