Admiral Reports on
the Mimic War
Washington, Oct. 11. The Nay De
partment has recehed Admiral Far
quahar's report of the ricfiit nianeuv
ers of the North Atlantic squadron off
Newport, H. I. The Adntral comments
primarily on the zeal utid enthusiasm
tho mimic nnvnl warfare nwakened
among tho officers and mm. The ex
ercises proper began on September 24
when tho red Bquadron, consisting of
the Kearsarge, Indiana, Texas, Scor
pion and Eagle accompanied by six
torpedo boats, put to fa to effect a
blockade of Newport. The remaining
cssels, the New York, .Mamachusetts,
Leydcn and Vlcksburg, eto stationed
as defenders of the harbor and consti
tuted tho Blue Squadron. The general
plan of defense followed by the Inside
squadron wns to place n battleship on
each Bide of and Just Inslrle the mouth
of tho harbor, so as to be concealed
from incoming essels. Heir, with
decks cleared for tctlon, batteries
trained forward and full htcam up, the
New York nnd Ylcksbtirt lay In wait to
lire Into nnd ram an enttircsome
member of the Red Squadron Picket
boats armed with rapid fire guns and
sharpshooters were prolded with a
sjstcm of signals to warn all hands of
tho approach of tho enemy nnd power
ful searchlights at Fort Greblo and
other points Insured protection nt
night. The general plan followed by
all tcBsels was not to 'urn on search
lights until the approach of n torpedo
boat was reported by a picket boat.
The plan of placing picket boats wns
ery successful and not a single tor
pedo boat got be one! them without be
ing reported. With a sufficient number
uf searchlights on shore It Is doubtful
If vessels could bo piloted nt night Into
n harbor which Is at all difficult of en
trance. Tho bow wave ond nnke of torpedo
boats was the first obJct that aided In
picking them up In the d.irkncss
"In this connection." navs the Admir
al, "I would suggest the advisability of
tho departments keeping as ninny tor
pedo boats or destrojerH as practicable
with the squadron nt all times to ac
custom both officers and men with their
general characteristics, movements
etc., nnd In order to carry on exercises
with them In nil the various ports
visited."
The Holland, unfortunately. In her
attack upon the Kearsarge the second
night did not reach her objective point
until after several torpedo boats had
arrived.
The second night's operations con
sisted of an nttnek upon the outside or
Red Squadron, b) live torpedo boats
and the Holland. As n rulo tho tor
pedo boats wero successful nlthough
this would scarcely hnvo Icen the case
with nn efficient boat set vice.
Every condition of 'u'llc was simu
lated as nearly as was losslble, al
though blank charges from the small
rapid-fire guns constituted all the tir
ing. While much wns wanting, sajs
Admiral Farquahar, both In time and
material to tarry out tho maneuvers
cm a large scale, still -i number of pro
fessional points wero brought out
which will bo of great vnluo In the fu
ture. The value of setrchllghts was
particularly Impressive, as was also the
work done by tho Holland, of which
Captain Folger sajs In nn additional
report:
"i no noiiaiui tjpo will play n very
serious part In future naval warfare.'
The uso or tho Singer In millions of
homes shows tho unprecedented suc
cess of these Ideal sowing machine.
It Is convincing proof that tho Singer
excels In all klndj of family sewing
and art needle work. All our sewing
machines are ot tho best construction,
beautifully decorated, and are mounted
on selected woods In finely finished
cabinets of artistic design. B. Ber
