Minister Wu'h Bride.
How the Chinese Minister at Wash
ington, Wu Ting-fang, secured, whrn
a )oting man and about to be married,
the unusual prl liege of seeing, bcfoio
the wedding da), the girl who was to
be his wife was told by him to several
friends a few dajs ngo.
"In China our joung men do not se

to their parents," he said.
"We know that our parents want us
to be happy and we are willing to let
them Judge who will make n good wife.
The )oung man Is never permitted to
see, before tho ceremony, tho one
whom ho Is to marrj.
"Wo have few unhappy marriages in
China, and perhaps that is because wc

people In America sometimes do.
"I was iry anxious to sou the girl
my parents had chosen for me, but
they told me It would be Impossible to

The Minister was silent for n fe.v
moments, and his mind was evidently
busy with the pleasant past. Then he
said with a half chuckle:
"What I was curious to know, but

Boss Croker's Humor.
Mr. Croker has a Item sense of humor
sajs the Chicago Record, which ocia-
siunally dlsplavs itself In his pulltlial
transactions, but he never did n funiiln
thing than to appoint Senator Hill
chairman of the committee to solicit
fluids for Hrvan mid Stnnihndd The
other members of tho finance commit
tee are Mr. Croker, Senator Murphy
and men who arc accustomed to such
service, but Senator Hill never solicit
ed a dollar for campaign purposes lu
his llfo and docs not know how to do It,
but that Is neither hero nor there. The
satire In making Hill the chairman and
responsible member of the monej -raising
committee Is appreciated by those
only who have heard or read tho
speeches In which he has attacked
Croker and Tammany Hall for black
mulllug corporations and Individuals,
saloon !ecpcis and criminals, anil as
sessing campaign taxes upon evey
body who can be pinched by the police.
While It Is the popular belief that Tam
many Hall raised Its slush funds by
those methods, It Is evident that Mr.
Corker intends that his licenser shall
shuie the responsibility during tno
When nuked his motive for placing
Hill at tbe hind of tho finance commit

was nioro familiar than any of tho rest
