SUGAR
'sassaaaaaaaaasassas
Washington I), (.'.., Will the twen
tieth century man ho n rnmly catci In
strail of n tobacco chewer or smoker''
will ho fly to the syrup bottle Instmil of
the wine bottle for his supreme mukc'n
lar and mental stl'iulus'
Such a condition of things Is distinct
ly foreshadowed by the results of cer
tain experiments which are being con
ducted In Washington.
The latest subjects of scientific ex-
perlmcnt Is sugar. Tests already ob-
talned show that this common domestic
article possesses marvelous recti pera-
ttve nnd stimulating .imperil"!". The
War Department Is Interested In ex-
perlmcnts being made with a le.v to
haWng sugar cubes form a part of tho
rations of troops to be used on forced
marches and under circumstances call
ing for nn unusual display of endur
ance. In France and Ocrmnny nrmy rations
nlready Include extra allowances of bu
gar cubes tinder certain circumstances,
The authorities here are already Batls-
fled that sugar does possess hitherto
unexpected properties nnd arc also In
terested In experiments being made
with Its sister product dulclne with u
view to seeing if n unity of the to will
not produce yet better results. It Is
also considered desirable to find some
more palatable form In which to pre
sent the saccharine than the ordlnnry
cubes. It Is probable that It will be
put up In some chicle now used by
confectioners, such as caramels or bon
bons.
In the event of this being done we
shall be presented with tho nnlquo
spectacle of an army marching to lo
tory braced up by the stimulating prod
ucts of the canilymnn Instead of those
of the canteen.
Tests of the effect of sugar upon the
vitality are made by means of the cr
gograph and crgostat. In the case of
tho former the first experiment mndo
by the scientists Is n trial of strength
of the finger. The middle finger of tho
right hand Is made to lift a weight nnd
tho degree of lifting force registered.
Tests procd that after sugnr had been
eaten the lifting forco Increased..
Fuller tests ore made on n man wIioao
strength has been depleted by turning
a heavy wheel.. This Is the nrgostnt
test. Immediate results in the shape of
additional strength are obsered after
the man has been supplied with sugar
and the crgostat Invariably registers
Increased force.
The experiments made thus far thor
oughly corroborate the tests made by
German and French mllltnry experts.
Hclentlsts nre also making tests to
prove whether tho saccharine element
In the chocolate tablets furnished to
French troops Is not the main source
of the strength contained In them.
It is believed that the basis of the
wonderful sustaining power of the co
coa bean Is the sugnr contnlned In It.
One of the reasons for assuming this
to be the case Is that the same wonder
ful powers of endurance displayed by
the natives of South America are para
lleled by the feats of the North Amer
ican Indians. The South America In
dian uses the cocoa bean, nnd his North
American brother exhibits precisely
the 6a me. Inciease of power, derived
from merely sucking a piece of sugar
cahe. The Inference Is, therefore, tint
the sugar In the coca bean is the source
of the South American Indian's extri
ordinary powers of endurance.
The government Is expected to or
der a number of tests to be made wlm
sugar Independently of those which
aro being conducted In relation to the
Wnr Department.
In tho event of the tests proving sat
isfnctoiy, the police departments in
some of the larger cities will make
tests of the use of sugar in the various
fotms which will be sent out In, under
the direction of the authorities. It is
expected that tho most convincing re
sults will bo obtained from thctfe tests.
Tho plan of uctlon suggested for adop
tion by the police will Indudo athletic
teats. They will be mailo especially
upon men whose muscular training ha
been developed so that it can be tested
to n very lino point by such cxeiclatu
as throwing the hummer, jumping, run
ning, and in the case whuie river po
lite nre employed, by rowing. For this
puiposu lustiiimuntH nie being made
which will register the foico of tho
muscular indumenta of the limbs.
Another department which has been
selected for theu trials Is the po.it
otllce where upeciall) dcllnlto results
nn expected Tho routes tit tho pusl-
men uie so exactly mcasuicd that tests
can bo mailo s)stcm.itlcully without
am lutcrfeiviico with the ordinary du
ties of tho cmplojes.
In caso the Idea Is carried out It U
proposed that nun empUijeil at tho va
rlous llfo Bavlng stations along the
coast also shall be subjected to similar
experiments. Tho calls upon their
powers of endurance are frequent and
seveio and they will mako the most
careful reports on tho'results disclosed.
It Is proposed to mako provision for
supplying the participants in athletic
contests with opportunities for expert
mentlng with tho uso of saccharins
products, such tests of endurance) .is
those made In long distance bicycle
runs being admirably adapted for the
purpose.
The establishment of tho fuels il
ready nseri tallied upon nn uxuet basis
will be 11 iuoi liupoitniil selentlllo feu,

I11L0 RACE PLANS
Hllo, No. 30. Hoolulu Park will at
New Years. If c en thine rocs rlcht.
be for tw dns the scene of a racing
meeting which will In ccry way excel
that of July Fourth of tills j ear, excel-
lent ns It was. The track Is now, cu
those who have visited It recently
know, In splendid shape. The area
within the half mile circle Is now all
leveled and a considerable portion of it
welt grassed over. In another month
the ball field will be so Binooth that
tho Hllo ball players, accustomed ns
they are to the undulating surface of
the boarding school grounds will prob
ably have somo difficulty in running rt
first, as they will miss the high spots
which they used to hit.
Two days of racing Is projected, ns
stated above. The owners of speedy
nags In Honolulu have frequently ex
pressed regret that they didn't come
over last July, nnd with a llttlo Induce
ment we mny expect to see the metro
polis well represented on the, track.
The Volcano Stables & Transportation
Company, proprietors of the park, will
do something pretty handsome In tin
way of purses, nnd local enterprises
nmong other business houses probably
causo something besides to be added.
If the proper thing is done In this llin
Honolulu horsemen can hardly back
out, as their own races arc always pa
tronized from this end.
Mr. McMnnus tho veteran horseman,
who brought Lupo into such excellent
shape for the Fourth of July races, Is
on deck, nnd bus his hands full working
out local equine talent In harness. The
results will surprise, oven tho wise ones
unless the Tribune Is much mistaken
Altogether New Years promises to bo
anything but a dull day, and the whole
town will feel the good results not only
In the pleasures of tho day, but in new
life afterward. Tribune.
