New York, Nov. 28, A cable tn tdu
Hun from Manila saya: The tr.itmpnrt

brings news of a terrible t)ihoon wliloli

ilwclllnKs, Including ftovcrnor Schroa

United Htntes auxiliary cruiser Yosem
He. The ton in of Indrajan and Terra-
foro were wiped out, and It la believed
hundreds of nntlvcs ncre killed. Cocot-
nut crops for four eara have been ru
Incd nnd the vegetation of tho Island
Jtllted by salt water.
llio Btorm burst with terrific rapidity
at about 10 o'clock In the morning
Tho Yosemlte, which ob occupying a
berth near tho collier Justin, dragged
her nnchora nnd was driven aground a
hundred yards from tho reef. The
bows woro crushed In. A launch Willi
a crew of fire men had previously left
tho ship to endentor to find n safe an
chorage. Indications being that the an
chors would not hold where tho cruiser
was. The storm broke after they had
left the ship, and It Is practically cer
tain that the heavy sea awnmped the
launch. The bodies of Coxswain I
'Swanson nnd Seaman George Anhel
were recovered nftcr tho typhoon had
subsided.
The storm tcerod round after the Yo
semtte grounded and sho was driven
off and carried to the Somayo cllrr-i.
whero her milder and propeller wor
broken. Boatswain Sweeney and
twelve of tho crew volunteered to take
a life lino ashore. A boat was lowered
for this purpose but it was Immediately
swamped by a big sea that swept over
It. All the occupants were carried away
from the boat, but they miraculously
succeeded In reaching land after nn
hour'a struggle with tho waves.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere had be
come of Inky blackness, and tho Yo
semlto, which had again been blown off
land, was drifting helplessly. The gait
was now blowing nt tho rato of a hun
dred miles an hour. All hope of anvln.i
the cruiser was abandoned and tho of
ficers nnd crew prepared for death. A
majority of the boats had been either
smashed or carried out of the davits.
and those that wcro left could accom
modate only halt of tho crew, even If il
had been possible for them to live In
tho enormous seas that wcro by tills
tlmo running.
The sea anchor had been put out and
held tho Yosemlte up In tho teeth of the
storm nnd prevented her from falling
Into the trough of the sen. She rodo to
this anchor and drifted rapidly until
d o'clock In the ctenlng. when the
weather cleared. The cruiser was then
sixty miles north and forty miles w-pfi
of Guam. She had labored so heavllv
that sho had sprung a leak, and all
hands. Including tho commander. Lieu
tenant Blcrer, and tho chief engineer,
worked heroically In trying to clear her
of the water that was pouring Into tho
rapidly filling forward compartments.
After tho violence of the storm had
subsided efforts were made to start the
engines. They wero finally got to work
and tho Yosemito, with a damago pro
peller, struggled landward at the rate
of two knots an hour. Tho water kept
gaining In the hold and the ship wat
gradually sinking. At 1:30 p. in. (in
November ISth tho Justin, which hi J
started In search of tho Yosemlte, pick
ed her up and attempted to tow her
back to Guam. Two hawsers were bro
ken and It was then decided that It was
Impossible to tako her Into port. The
cruiser was then scuttled, after sho wai
abandoned, all hands going aboard tho
Justin. The Yosemlte sank bow first nt
C o'clock and tho Justin stood away fur
Guam. Paymaster Ballard saved CR,

Joseph Travis, a passenger on tho Slier

disaster.

An Interesting example of the ex
tent to wlhch trustful Inventors may bo
victimized by foreign patent agencies
Is furnished by some recent proceed
ings In tho English bankruptcy court
In tho case of one Percy R. J. Willis.
The bankrupt testified that the was as
sociated with another person In carry
ing on what they cnlled tho Interna
tional Patentees' Agency. He and his
partner also used the name of Donald
Cameron In carrying on the business
The names of Inventors In tho United
States having been ascertained, he
sent out to them a number of circulars
containing Invitations to remit money
for the purposo of hating provisional
patent rights granted to them In En
gland. In response to these invitations
he received a large number of remit
tances with Instructions to protect tho
Inventions specified. In G33 Instances
the remittances were not used. It ap
peared that tho bankrupt's firm had
absorbed In Its business more than 110,-
000 received from Inventors In the
United States and not applied to the
purposes for which the money was senr.
Mr. Willis could not filo any statement
showing what had been done with
these receipts. Tho surprising feature
of the business Is tho case with which
the promoters obtained money from
their foreign customers. The bank
rupt freely admitted that In the case of
one of his corporate agencies ho ap
peared In tho double capacity of Rich
ard Ralnsford, the manager of the com
pany, and Percy Willis, Its consulting
engineer.
SIMPLICITY OF SCIENCE.
Science Is always simple. It's only
quackery that Juggles with Jargon.
Medical treatment of the past dealt
with "simples," the puro vegetable
remedies provided by nature. Sagwa
Is compounded of simples. It Is pure
ly vegetable. It Is scientific, because
It s based on tho known curative pro
perties of tho herbs, roots, barks and
gums which It contains. It Is the
most efficient blood purifier and blood
builder known. Ninety per cent of
diseases aro curable by tho prompt
nnd proper use of Sagwa. It expels
from the blood all corrupting anct cor
roding elements and builds up a new
body with new blood. There Is no
