IFOR SATURDAY SADNESS
You may hitch your wagon to a star,
but please give me an electric car.
With the prospects of building oper
ations without end In Honolulu's busi
ness quarter during the twentieth cen
tury, the first Legislature might well
consider if builders ought to be allowed
quite so much obstruction of public
convenience as they now create.
Tho writer who concludes that Haw.
Is the proper abbreviation of Hawaii
must be related to the citizen of Wyan
dotte who dated his letters "Y&." liar.
would In time be cut down to the sten
ographic sign for laughter, which looVs

Honolulu missed electric car tractlrn
by being Just n year previous with the
mule charter. Now It looks ns If Ha
waii may miss n telegraph cable by
not getting It before Marconi has ap
peared with a cheaper mode of clectilc
communication. Invention these days
would seem to be having a continuous
race with convenience. You may buy
today n thoroughbred watchdog, that
will bo a subject for cajolery, polsm
and rollc not to mention the dog tax
Tomorrow the chances arc our neli;h-
bor will have n non-taxable rubber dns

fangs, capable of being directed with
torpedo-llkp precision at a footpad 'u

A prophet In t!m Ladles' Home Jour

the twentieth century, the extermina

tion. If this isn't enough to make tho
present Honolulu generation Jealous of
posterity, nothing else will do It. With
mosquitoes wiped out. though, whr.t
would there be left of disciplinary
agengles for strengthening of th?
community's moral stamina? The nut-
wer to such n question might well h;

If we can save tnxes by doing with
out municipal government, we can
bbvo a good deal more by getting Con
gress to abolish tho other kind of gov
ernment we now have. Wo can save
heaps of money besides by going back
to grass houses providing we can (In 1
grass to steal for building them withal.
When tho Canadian Tories held
sway -in tho popular branch of the Do
minion Parliament, ns well ns In the
life nppolntlvo Scnnto which, In tint
party's eighteen years of straightaway
power they packed with their Bupcran
nuatcd partisans they went back to tho
raw times of Yankee politics to find a
scheme of perpetuating their power.
They found ono to their hand in the
Gerrymander." Last winter the Li
beral government, fully empowered by
tho people's voice, undertook to abolish
the "(Jerrymander." What the thing
Is may bo understood by tho people of
Hawaii when told that It Is as if tho
Independent party here, supposing that
It had tho power with Its leglslatlva
majority to change tho boundaries of
electoral districts, should do so and, as
one of the changes made, Bhould carve
off a corner of tho Fourth nnd add It
to tho Fifth, and vice versa, so that
enough Republican voters should bo
taken from tho Fourth nnd enough In
dependent voters taken from tho Fifth
both together to destroy the Republi
can majority In the Fourth without en
dangering very much tho Independent
majority In the Fifth. That would be
n "Gerrymander," Former election
returns would indicate accurately
enough for tho purpose tho parts of
districts to bo trnnsfcried. Well, tho
Tory-packed Senato threw out tho
measure, which simply proposed to
rcstora the ancient electoral landmarks.
Tho returns of tho recent general clw
tlon for tho gerrymandered provlnco
of Ontnilo prove tho party fidelity of
tho Tory Senators In rejecting the bill.
With a popular majority of but 3288 In
n total vote of 377,552 tho Tories elect
ed 5.1 members out of 91. That Is, with
n popular excess of only 0.87 per rent
they elected an excess of CO. 13 per cent
of members, The Solid South should
take off its hat to llin Solid Tory Senate

FAULTS OF INSPECTOR
Editor Evening Bulletin: In answer
to The article In the Advertiser of tv
day pertaining to Samuel Ladd's build
ing on Punchbowl, I wish to state that
the plumbing and sewerage of said
building was done In a practical and
sanitary manner and was approved and
the final certlflcatc was signed by 12.
J. Duffy, Inspector at the time.
The cause of all this talk and trou
ble of this Job was the result of C. E.
Moore, plumbing Inspector, trying lo
learn something of the plumbing trade
from certain Portuguese that claim
they nro plumbers. I believe that It
would be the duty of the Honorable
Hoard of Health to remove the said
Inspector C. E. Mooro for Incompetency
nnd fill said olllce with a practk-il
plumber. And If they do not see fit to
put in a practical man. thai the ouVc
bo filled by the assistant plumbing In
spector who has nn Idea of plumbing.
My reasons for making these state
ments, take for Instnnce n doctor who
has graduated fiom n medical college,
receiving his diploma and license to
practice, then having a bricklayer come
and tell him how he should practice
Now, In regard to our plumbing In
spector. C. E. Moore Is not tho man to
fill the ofllce of plumbing Inspector r.f
Honolulu. My reasons for this state
ment can be verified by all the prac'I
ral plumbers of Honolulu:
First That he Is not a competent
man to fill the ofllco.
Second That he understands noth
ing about plumbing or plumbing
I believe It the duty of the taxpa)
ers of Honolulu to Issue an Injunction
on the auditor restraining him from Is
suing n warrant for tho salary of the
said C. H. Moore ns he Is not capable
of drawing It.
