DEFBNCB OF McCOMB.
Editor Evening Bulletin: Since Mr.
J. L. McComb, the evangelist of the
former Jojful News Mission has ben
most unjustly run down In nil the dai
ly papers, except tho Evening Bulletin,
tho public nt large formed tho Impul
sion that Mr. McComb was a dlshoncit
man and conducted the Mission simply
to make money for himself.
Tho secretary of tho Mission waris
to tell the Christian people and otkeis
who havo given most generously for
Its support that this Is utterly untru-i.
Nc.uly all tho money needed tcucnrr?
on the work was collected by tho st
rctary, n oung woman, as busings
men will well remember, el'oplo who
know her know- nlso that sho Is far too
conscientious to ask an) body for a cent
of money to carry on a Christian won;
unless sho Is sure that It Is spent fot
the purpose It Is given.
Sho says: "When we opened our new
hall on Nuuanu and King streets Ian
June we did so with tho Intention rf
keeping the Mission up until October
nth. Mr. McComb had already then de
cided to return to the Stntes at tho crd
of this time. All tho money he asked
to collect was enough to keep up the
Mission till October and to pay oft our
debts. A Blnccro Christian lady known
alnio.U to over) body hero and whose
woril everybody would believe can tes
tify to this. She knew then oil about
our arrangements.
I have novcr collected enough money
to enry on our work until October, ua
tho Christian peoplo may feel sure that
the money given was spent for tho Mil
slon. A prominent business man lien,
for whom Mr. McComb has worked for
two ears, sa)s that ho has found him
most honest and upright In all his deal
ings. When tho reporters wroto what
they havo did they ask themselves the
question: "What would Jesus do?"
Surely not or else most of tho things
mentioned about Mr. McComb would
huve remained unwritten, for I cannot
call It anything cIbo but lies. The men
of a dally paper better remember oneo
In n while that tho time will come
when they will have to give an account
of all they write, especially when !'
comes to ruining a man's or woman's
character forever In tho eye of tho peo
plo Just by saying things nbout then
which aro cither not truo or greatly
exaggerated.
I believe nnd I know that Mr. Mc
Comb was a slnceio Christian when ho
started In his work nnd that he tried to
do good to his fellow men. Why do not
more, especially Christians glvo a man
a lifting hand and help him nil they
can when ho really wants to do right
Instead of talking about his past Ufa
rand try to ding him down again. Chrlat
sa)s: "As far as the east Is from (.he
west, bo far havo l removed thy trans
gression." Let us follow more after Ills
example.
CHRISTIAN.
Honolulu, Dec. 12, 1900.
Hev Silas I', I'erry led tho men's
ifiectlnfi In tho Y. M. C, A. Sunday af
ternoon. Ills text vvns; "I.lft up j 0,1 1
heads, O yo Kates, and he e lifted up
yo cverlasttnR doors and the King of
Glory shall come In." Tho preacher
made an earnest appeal for tho accept
anco by all, of Christianity.
