Mr. Atblll also reported two matters
for tho Investigation of the league.
One was that of two Japancso women
from Ivvllel In tho Queen's hospital,
who desiring n now mode of life need"!
such asslstince ns the Icaguo mlgnt
be nble to give.
Tho other was the case of thrco Ja
panese laborers sent up from Haw nit
under sentenco of the Circuit Court at
Kohala for assault on a Japanese luna
In tho so-called 'Kona plantation riot.
These men were sentenced to Imprison
ment for eighteen months, henco be
long to tho long term class having to
do their tern In Honolulu. Eight oth
ers under shorter terms remain on Ha
waii. Extraordinary allegations nre
made regarding the trial and canv Ictlon
of these thrco men In particular.
It Is said that It can be proved thit
they were at home when the riot took
place and had not the remotest con
nection with It. but.that on the follow
ing morning tho police hauled In every
Japanese In sight. At the trial, tho
league directors state, the proceedings
wero rushed because the attorney for
th'e defendants had to hurry oft to a
political meting of tho Republican par
ty. Indeed the attorney lsnsald to have
left before tho trial was concluded, and
the Japaneso entrusted the crucial part
of their case to a now iavvvcr. .
Both matters were referred to the
legal aid committee.
After discussion of a suggestion i
Mr. Pearson, Mr. Azblll drew up a reso
lution which carried, to tho effect that
any member of tho league or of tho
community knowing of cases for tho
lcaguo's action may report them to the
Investigating committee, which In turn
may refer tho cases to the legal all
committee, leaving theso committer
to bring them to the nttcntlon of tho
board of directors.
Mr. Westervclt brought up the ques
tion of Incorporation and It was re
solved that tho league should be In
corporated upon n limited liability bi-
Bls tho business to bo entrusted to tho
legal aid committee.
