Captain and Crew.
New Yotk, Dec. 17, A cablegram to
the World from Nassau, N. P., s.ts
that the Thomaston (Maine) schooiiT
Mary E. Lemond has been drhen by
a squall upon the reefs of the Island of
Abacu, the northernmost of the Dab
inns. This now well known derelict
has been sighted thirteen times, A
pasting steamship set her on fire nttl
a portion of her stern burned off, but
she appears to bo still valuable. The
British steamship Antllla has been
sent from Nassau by the Colonial Gov
ernment to save the schooner It post!
hie. Tho most remarkable queitlon In the
ndventures of the schooner Is "How did
Captain Sprout and his seven men get

tlio survivors arrived hero on the Rd
Cross liner Camctense, on October 1-1,
having sailed from Pnra.
The Mary E. I-cmond sailed from
Fcrnandlnn for Maralnlqtic, on August
21th and was first reported dismasted
nnd nbandoned on September l'tii.
The Antilles current sent her Into the
track of South American nnd West In

November 19th tho Norwegian
Btcamshlp Frcy, from Santiago for
Philadelphia set her on fire and she
was reported by the steamship L'ller as
burning on November 20th. Only hir
Htcrn and rigging was destroyed by
flro, however. She was too soggy to
burn nnd her cargo of lumber ke'pt her
afloat On December 2d she w.ij
sighted north of Abaco. nnd while a
small coasting vessel was trying- ta
tow her into shallow water a squall
drovo her on the rock. She had float
ed about COO miles.
It Is supposed that ctthcr the tlrltUh
steamship Maranenz or tho British
steamer Hilary, rescued tho crew of
the Lermond and took them to Pan,
but there Is no record of tho fact.
