Washington, Dec. 2S. From the
nrosent outlook matters are tending
toward an extra session of Congress 'f
Senator Hanna persists in keeping th-f
ship subsidy bill beforo the Senate. Tln
opp..rltlon to tho bill Is solidifying
among the Senators from the South
and Middle West, and even those who
ore In favor of scne kind of a subsidy
bill object to the present form of tlie
Krye bill. At the same time It Is gen
erally understood that Senator Hanna
has set his heart upon the passage tit
tho bill and will not permit it to no

other alternative offers It Is bellevod
ho will force the Senate to consider t'

unkindly to the Idea of an extra ses

stand a better chance of success should
It lie crowded out of the few days ro

The reported vindictive attitude of
Senators Pcttlgrew and Allen against
the ship subsidy bill, principally be

Interview with Pettlgrew, published
In a local Journal. Pcttlgrew said he
was certain the subsidy bill will not
pass at this session. He added: "Senn
tor Allen and Senator Butler havo
formed a plan with me to defeat action
on tho bill, and we will fight It In oveiy
wnv nosslble. We have enough on our
side to do this. You see, there are but
fifty-one legislative days left In this
session. There are fourteen great ap
propriation bills to be considered, to
gether with the reapportionment bill.
Giving a week to each bill, and this
can bo easily done, we would bo com
