He
Arrives in Honolulu
Incognito But is
Recognized.
THE SECOND SON OF THE
MARQUIS OF QUEENSBERRY
Like His Father a Patron of Manly
Sports-Takes Interest in
Honolulu Football
Games.
It transpires that Honolulu Is nt
present receiving n visit fium Lord
l'i'icy Sliolto Douglas, second son of
the Marquis of Qucenslicrty.
When he arrived o- by what steamer,
i anno t at this writing be iisiertnlntd.
but It Is said to have been full six
months ngo. The name "Uird Dou
Ins" appeared In a thioiihli paasuiiKe'
list nnd utdncled no attention. t'nlew
his lordship has been away In the
meantime. It is remarkable that ho
should not have been recognized by
someone here long ago.
Lord Sliolto, to use the name bv
which his personality Is Identified on
this side of the world, has nt nil events
been seen In attendance nt a footb.il!
game In Honolulu within the past fev
dm. He showed great Interest in the
sport as It Is practiced here.
He left England when he wnB very
young. Coming out to California he
married a jonng lady vocalist at Loi
Angeles. San Francisco nevvspapou
for a time took delight In "baiting a
live lord," et Lord Sliolto appears to
hac come out of the ordeal with
siathless escutcheon. Like his father,
he Is a patron of sport, and ns well
thoroughly manly In character.
WATBB MAIN MAN TRAP
The Insecure nature of the coering
to the water gate of the main supply
pipe at the corner of the new Hall
building was the Immediate cause of
what might have been n M-ry series
accident this morning. As Allen Dunn
wns crossing the street nt that point
he stepped upon the Iron covering nnd
In nn Instant was precipitated lntcrtho
opening lecclving a painful bruise to
his Kg. It was cry fortunate for him
that he did not break a limb. It Beems
that through the evident negligence of
tho water omco a large amount of rust
nnd dirt had been nllowed to accumu
late so that the catering did not lit
the opening. It seems strange that
when the great amount ot traffic at this
point Is taken Into consideration that
some pet son or animal has not broken
n leg before this. A long pole was plac
ed Insldo the opening and the water
office was notified of the existence of
this man trap.
Following on the heels of the acci
dent this morning those In authority
evidently lost no tlmo in preventing u
repetition of the above affair, for men
were setto work along Fort street Im
mediately to clear away the rust and
accumulation so that the covers would
fit In their proper place.
"Tho Boston girl I was engaged to
picked me up on grammnr before a
week had passed over our heads."
"You got off easy. The one I knew
corrected my English while I wns pro
posing to her."
A clergmnn wnB dining In a hotel
with some commercial travelers, who
made Jokes about him. Ho moved not
a muscle ot his face, nnd after dinner
one of them approached him, saying:
"How can ou sit quietly and hear
nil that has be,en said, without uttering
a rebuke?'
"My dear sir," said the cleric, "I am
chaplain to a lunatic asylum." Select
ed.
'As I understand It.' remarked the
stranger, as the procession dlsappeaicd
over the hill, "the coroner's Jury re
turned a verdict of death from natural

"Yes replied Rattlesnake rcte, "yrm
see, he waB naturally slow, and so
wus Blower with his gun than th'

to get a quick verdict.'
