Parson Sheriff Gets
to Work Promptly
Portland, Me.. Jan. 1. At the stroke
of 12, last night. Orrln T. Despcaux, the
retiring sheriff of Cumberland county,
met his sucicmioi, the Rev. Samuel K.
Pearson, and handed over to him the
keys of the sheriff's olllco nnd the Jail.
This formnllty, which took place nt
tho sheriff's headquarters In tho city
building, was witnessed by several
of the new deputy sheriffs and a num
ber of enthusiastic prohibitionists.
This morning an entire new forco of
deputy sheriffs will be Installed In
office. Tho special duty of enforcing
tho prohibitory law In Portland will
fall to tho lot of Charles A. Plummer,
a former liquor deputy under Sheriff
Cram, nnd tho Rev. Henry T. Skllllngs
n Methodist preacher of South Port
land. It was very dry around town
last night. In anticipation of a vigorous
enforcement of the prohibitory law.
Mnny of the saloons havo closed out
their stock.
