MORRIS COLLECTION FOR
HOMES OF HONOLULU
Splendid Works of Artist Brush
Available for the Intellectual
Some of Best Pieces May
It la to ho hoped the art loving peo
ple of Honolulu are iipprcclutlng tho
beautiful art collection brought hero
by Mr. Morris, it offers one of thn
great opportunities of tho town, dn
many beautiful homes haw been erect
ed within tho last few years nud no
expense having been spared In tho w.iv
of furniture nnil flnlsn It docs seeru
partlculaily desirable that thn Intellec
tual furnishings should bo consistent
with tho other surroundings.
Thcro Ib perhaps nothing that 'Indl
rates tho Intellectual development 0,
lack of It better than tho pictures. It
Is very much In linn with tho books nun
sees In n library that Indlcnto life
status of Its occupants.
In this collection which has a won
derful variety of both subject nnd
treatment, foreign nnd American land
trapes and from all tho quarters of tho
world, winter nnd autumn scenes from
Now England, farm scenes from En-
Eland, mountnln and loch from Scot
land nnd marines from tho stormy At
lantic, In fact every vnrlcty of subject
Ib represented. Of the paintings worthy
of special mention are n couple of land
scapes by Lnmnsurn. rt Southern paint,
cr of note. Quo Is n November day,
cold nnd gray with trees denuded ff
loaves nnd the distant mountains vnguo
and Indefinite, and ovc alt the haze
and obscurity of the late autumn; tho
silver colored brook whose bankr are
lined by masslte rocks covered with
lichens and moss, ilcar cut and
weighty, worn smooth by th eactlon
of tho running stream. The picture Is
low (n tone but Impressive. It Is a
perfect representation of the seaio-..
The other picture by this nriUt I? 1
farm on an old Virginia hl'.'.jld?. The
barn with Its grey wcathrbeven co-
erlng affords relief to the quiet. fool'Jng wag ln orJer t0 the charming mu-

arms acalnst the skv. an 1 hr and ' cnt
there a clump of scrub oV give varlty I Mr and Mr,, T. Rnin Walker and
to the form of the competition: an old m. May wm ieae for England in
country road with well vora ruts goes
ftraicht up to the barn and well filled
to doubt with nature'; bounty: this
looking to the valley beyond, that is
partially filled with .pray and purple
clouds that suggest rale, and looking
ln through the miet an1 clouds beyond
you can. plainly discern the dlstnnt
mountains. The picture is simply de
licious ln color and simple ln treat
ment and would be a tern ln any home
cr collection. Spring Blossoms" by
I Johnston is a veritabl poem of that tgalcst T. McCants" o'.ewart. receiver,
season of the year. An orchard with praying for Judgment of ID000 as ren
tr laden with llossornk. a couple of 1 tal for the lands occupied by the Mau
younc eahes looking at each otliT with I mil el plantation. The petition asks for
b-.i lne satlsfaetlon and a flock of sheep possession of th" lands In case of de
frsilcE contentedly qu the luscious fault of payment of the aboe sum by
grass co to make up a picture of p-acc
and contentment. The purity of tho
color and the freedom of the treatment
li an artistic triumph. A painting by
fooland called "Eventide" Is a stronic
picture In twinleal t;itment and Is
equally strong In sentiment. The set
ting sun Is Jun touching the tr- tops,
the building Is In dfp shadow, the
sh-p are grouped in f.'ont of th fold,
the shepherd dog Is assisting Its mas
ter In getting the. animals Into the
building. The Intelligence of the dog
as ho helps to do his share of tho duty
Is quite a feature, of the picture. This
artist Is very prominent In his own
country and It Is scldori that one finds
nnjtlilng of his so far away from home.
It Is very gratifying to Mr, Morris
to know that a number of his beautiful
pictures will decorate point) of tho finest
homes hero. There Is still nn oppor
tunity to procure sumo of tho gems ot
this collection. The Uitmuer. Sever
ance nnd Arthur Put ton's picture of
Loch Awno nnd Oipdupp's noted
"Moonlight" Is still within reach. Tho
combination for this plaeo seems to bn
very desirable flno homes nnd good
pictures nt moderate prlooB by a relln
blo dealer who bus leen known to
many peoplo hero for n quarter of a
Mr. Morris will ho hero until the
Mnrlposa.salls tho first of next week, so
peoplo desiring some of tho really beau
tiful pictures In this .carefully selected
collection should not hesitate Thn
caro and nnxlety of transportation of
such choice nnd dellcute works Is ob
viated In this enso and Rives tho peoplo
nn unusual advantage In this ns w.oll
