SHIPPING NOTES.
There were forty-one sailing vessels and
one ocean steamer In port yesterday.
The Carralllon Is to load coal at Tacoma
for Hllo, and the H. C. Wright lumber at
Evened for Kahulul.
The bark Mohican and the barkentl,,e
Irmgard tor this port, and the brig Con
suelo for MahuVona cleared from San
Francisco on the 8th Inst.
When the Ze-ilandli left San Francisco
all the vessels of the sugar fleet which left
here up to the time the Gaelic silled, had
arrived at the Coast wlih the exception'
of the Rosamond and schooner Columbia.
The four masted ship Susquehanna
which Is expected here with coal ballast
for the navy is having, reliuurance offereJ
on her. 1 he big vessel sailed from Nor
folk, Va . In December last for Manila and
was 'spoken on Feb. jth.ln latitude 27 de
gree southjongltude 27 degrees west, ilme
then nothing has been seen of her.

The Civil Service Commlaslonera
left for Hllo in tho Klnau today to bo
gone two weeks. Sub-boarda of exam
iners will bo appointed nt Hllo and
perhaps at Kahulnl but the commis
sioners nro not sure an to ihe latter
port. The local board will consist of
five men, three of whom have already
been appointed. They are; Professors
Alexander. Ingalls and Banks. a
Chief Examiner Severn waa Inter
viewed by a Bulletin reporter this
morning Just prior to his departure for
Hllo. "
"The examinations." Mr. Severn said,
"wilt be held on the 6th of July, and'ln
case a large number of applicants take
the examinations, tho time will be ex
tended to the 6th of July. Quite la
number of appointments will probably
be made here in time but no one can
tell how soon. Tho Naval Department
has Informed me that it will want sev
eral clerks here before lone;. Soven or
eight new ofllclnls aro needed by the
Customs Department. A railway mall
clerk will also bo appointed, and sev
eral clerks will bo placed on tho differ
ent Inter-Island boat
"Hawaii Is entitled to ten men In tho
Printing Department, while at pres
ent they havo but one. The pay there
Is quite good, being no cents an hour.
"Tho next examinations will bo
held before December 1st, but I am not
prepared to state what examinations
will be given then. I am Inclined to
think that among others bookkeepers'
examinations will be held,"

if gold dust have been washed from
the mountain-like piles of pay dirt
that was thrown up by tne army of
telling miners through the long, weary
months of winter. Within a month
$3,000,000 or $4,000,000 will have been
taken out, and tho washing of the win
ter dumps will then ba finished. The
spring clean-up of the camp Is estimat
ed at 115.000,000 and the Bummer out
put at $10,000,000. V
