At the afternoon teuton yesterday,
the Senate resumed the tjilrd reading
of the Appropriation hill. Mr. Kalau
okalanl, not satisfied with the raise the
Sheriff of Lahalna had been glren dur
ing the morniDK session, moved for a
reconsideration of the Item and it was
raised again to 12400. This opened
the door wide for onslaughts on the
part of the Senators frqm the various

of Hawaii was raised from $1800 to
15000, the Sheriff of Knual from $3800
to 14000, the Sheriff of Maul from $4300
An attempt was made by Mr, Naka-
Daahu to do the samo thine with the
deputy sheriffs of the various Islands
but the Senators were not as liberal
where theso men were concerned and
the plan failed.
Other salaries were raised as follows:
Salary of the District Magistrate, Ewa.
Tnird Class, iieso to 12400; Clerk or
Fourth Circuit $2400 to $3000.
When It came to the Item of pay of
police for this island, Mr. Crabbe stood
and fought for $3600 Instead of $2400
for the second deputy sheriff (Albert
McGurn), Mr. Crabbe said that this
office he considered above the senior
captain and that, In all Justice, he
should Ret at least as much as the lat
ter. Crabbe's eloquence worked and
the Item went through at the sum
Mr. Crabbe also moved for the In
crease in salary of the Hack Inspector
(Sam Macy), from $2400 to $300T. This

The Public Works Department got
its share of tho Horn of Plenty, as fol
lows: Salary of Chief Clerk, '$.200 to
$5400; Road . Supervisor, Honolulu,
Fourth District. $3000 to $4200; Iload
Supervisor, Honolulu, Fifth District,
$3000 to $3600, Superintendent Hono
lulu Water Works and Clerk of Mar
ket, $5400 to $6000; Pay of Assistant
Market Keeper, $720 to $840.
Under the head of the Commission
of Public Instruction, Mr. Crabbe made
an attempt to raise the salary from
$7200 to $8000 but tho Incumbent was
not popular with the natives and there
was nothing but a deadly silence as a
result of Mr. Crabbe's motion.
Mr. Crabbe also made an attempt to
raise the salary of the secretary (Dr.
Rogers), from $3600 to $4000, but there
was the same deadly silence.
Under the head of Commission of
Public Lands, the salary of the Com
missioner was raised from $7000 to
$7200 while the pay of the Commission
er of Agriculture and Forestry was
raised from $4800 to $7000. . ;
Board of Health items passed as fol
lows: Goernmcnt Physician, Lahalna,
Maul, $1800 to $2000; Hllo and Olaa,
Hawaii, $1800, changed to read, "Hllo,
Han all, $1200."
Under unpaid bills Incurred on ac
count of bubonic plague, the Item, F.
Harrison, $253 60, was raised to $548.
Dr. R. P. Mjcrs was voted his "spcclfln
salary exceeding $1800. part of time."
In the sum of $97.25 and Charles Wil
cox was voted his $400 extra pay.
The salary of the Registrar of Pub
lic Accounts was reconsidered and rais
ed from $5000 to $5400 and the salary
of tho bookkeeper was raised from
$3400 to $3600.
The Senate adjourned at 3:45
