nnd made the usual largo number of
analyses of milk. Pi of. Shorey has
fixed a standard which in his JikIk
ment la the correct test of pure whole
biimo milk In Honolulu. Ills standard
calls for ll.. tntnl solids and 2.5 butter
fat. During tho month tin found sev
enty sumpleti of milk both at dailies
and out ot wagom, that tested better
than this standard.
Samples below standard were taken
from tho dairies of S. Nobrega, Ta
nukl. A. Illchard, PuJIoka, Tanres, Ka
wamoto. Nnkatnnl, J. Hlhn,- Kouza,
Palama Hcstaurant and Quong restau
Prof. Sliorey makes the following
"1 presume It Is generally known
that the Inst portion ot milk given by
a cow Is much richer In butter fnt
than the first portion ami as It Is the
almost universal custom for dairymen
to allow the calves to run with tho
cows nnd to reserve tho lust portion
of tho milk for them It Is easily Been
that the cahes are fed lit the expense
of custoniei'H who buy and pay for
milk containing tho normal amount of
Walnlae Is said to bo tho only one
whore the ratvrs do not have tho pref
erence oer tho purchasing public.
The report rays that It Is imwtho to
feed dairy tattlo on "brewery grain."
Speaking gencrnlly. It has been found
that cows, when fed on brewery grains
nnd similar foods, become diseased and
give milk which ia especially Injurious
to chlldien. Feeding Mich material to
dairy cows is prohibited in many ot
tho principal cities of America.

crepancy between tho terms of the bill
and tho Intentions of the people who
signed tho petition Is only 300 feet
