Oil as a fuel,pu,tho freight steamers
of the Inland companies Is a probabil
ity of the near future. While Chief
Engineer William Johnson of the Wit
tier Company Is In San Francisco he la
making a careful study of the subject
with a view to Installing tho new fuel
In some of the Wilder boats.
With arrangements that ore now
being made to bring oil here In great
tank steamers which will be controlled
at this end of the line, n good and con
stant supply of the fuel wilt be assured,
so that no shortage will ever happen.
The use of tho oil Is becoming very
general On tho Coast since the dis
covery of the deposits there, and that
tt Is cheaper and cleaner than coal,
goes without saying. At the present
tlmo It Is not well enough understood
or controlled to allow It to be used In
passenger vessels, but In freight boats
It Is serving the purpose of coal In
etery wny. Especially for long trips
Is oil a good fuel, for Hf saves a great
deal of room In full space which may
be used for freight.
Tho trip of a ery large freight
steamer using ull as a fuel Is comment
ed upon In the New York Murine Jour
nal as followu:

from Uomeo to London, n distance of
nliout 10,000 miles. The method adopt
ed on the Cowrlo was to atomize tho
crude 'oil at the mouths of the fur
naces by blowing It Into fires In the
form of spray by means of steam Jibs,
end In this a complete combustion of
the fuel was obtained. A comparison
was made with the old system of coal
fuel on this ship, with the result that
thero was found to be r. saving of oer
10 per cent In tho weight of fuel a day,
and by the reduction of the work la
firing with oil fuel the complement of
flicmen wns reduced from 10 to 0. The
space occupied by a ton of oil as com
pared with tho same weight of coal
was much less, being 34 ruble feet for
the former to 13 cubic feet for the lat
terthe coal being bituminous. There
nrc considerable quantities of oil fuel
to bo found In Uomeo, and It Is said
to be superior to any yet found 7n
Russia or tho United States."
The continued rains up Manoa Valley
and the high price of rubber (wots have
