Pittsburg, Aug. 10. The general
strike order of President Shaffer of tho
Amalgamated Association, became ef
fective today and the army of steel, i
Iron and tin workers to which It Is nd-
dressed is expected to throw down
Its tools at the clote or the Ifist turn. !
The close approach of the final hour!
has produced no appreciable change
here nnd ns yet there has not been n
ripple of excitement. Strong appeals)
have been made to both President
Shaffer and President Gompers asking I
that they throw their Influence toward
a settlement and various plans for 1
avoiding n general strike have been
discussed and offered by disinterested
men on the outside. There may yet
como a powerful peacemaker with a
form of compact that will he accepted
by both sides, but for the presc.it the
strlko seems inevitable,
The open letter written by President
Gompers, of the American Federation
of Labor, Is generally discussed today
and construed by each Individual ac
cording to his sympathies. The strik
ers asserted that it was eminently sat
isfactory to them nnd that It assured
them of the sympathy nnd support of
the Federation. Opponents of the
strike Insisted that there was but llttlo
consolation for the strikers In tho
statement. They say that President
Gompers does not approve the strike,
and stood ready while here to accept
ond support any plan lor a satisfac
tory settlement. It Is not known hero
what steps tho Federation of Labor
will take. None of Its olllclals are hero
