The Lost Mine a
Golden Dream
cui'isiisiiisiPiiiiHsiaia'siaiaiaiaaiaisja.'s.'ajaiaiaii!!!
Opposite each other, with the camp
fire between us, I sat with my mining
partner, Sam Davis, at our camp on
Willow creek, in the mountnlns a
few miles north of Prcscott, Arizona.
Luck had been against us. Wo were
plarcrlng with n rocker, and had been
working for n couple of weeks in
what from nit nppoarnntes wns lrglu
ground; but that very afternoon, nftcr
having with much labor turned the
water out of Its channel and dug a
long trench, we found an old rusty tin
can right down on the bed rock, which
proved that the ground had been
worked before; nnd after washing a
number of rockers of dirt and getting
only three or four small colors, wo
gaw'it up as n bad Job, somewhat dis
couraged at our loss of time and labor.
A number of times while Sam and
1 had been partners he had dropped
hints of a lost mine, giving me the Im
pression that he knew something of
one, nnd now I said:
"Sam, If you know anthlng definite

"Well, hut sec hele, sain. If you
found It more tlinn two years ago,
hnw you nowr been back to It?"
"No."
"Oh. I see! I guess It Isn't worth
much."
"That s alt j on know about It," nnd
with that Sam shut up as tight as an
oyster, but my curiosity had been
aroused (possibly my greed also), and
niter eating humble pie. nnd talking
as nice to Sam as I knew how for halt
on hour, I got him to tell me his expe
rience in finding the mine, and got his
promise to tnke me to It.
How he found tho mine I will tell In
