ADVICE TO YOUNG
BY CONNIE MACK,
Manager of the Philadelphia American League Club.
Judgment Is Superior to Speed In Oaie Running.
Base runners adopt manj different methods to secure a long start when
on the bases It often happtns that the plajcr who takes a big lead will con
tinually bo forced bark to the baso by the pitcher, who will throw tlmo and
tlmoigaln to the the runner out When It Is mceisarj for a plajer to slldo
back to save a put-out the wear and tear on his sjstein Is suth that when In
actually slatts foi the next base ho has lost much of his speed, and Is generally
put out There Is n right and wrong waj to steal a base, and the most unl
veisal, that adopted by all the best baie runners In the game Is to keep close
to the base, standing quietly nnd npparentlj carelessly, ns though pnjlng no
attention to the doing of the game The pitcher will frequentlj glnnce over
his shoulder to watch the base, and seeing the runner In this position, takes
a great deal for granted and feeling satlslled the plajcr will not nttempt to
steal a base on him, beconio careless. This Is the opportunltj looked for
nnd the plajcr should at onco preparn himself to start promptlj and success
will, In the majority of cases, follow the play.
This part of base running Is not followed closely enough The general Im
pression prevails that to gtt n couple of jards- start Is the most desirable
waj of accomplishing the object. This Is wrong, and In the double desire to
steal the base nnd protect himself, the plnjer often loses manj advantages
which otherwise he would ho able to avail himself of It often happens that a
slow runner will be more successful In stealing u baso than a muth faster run
ner. 1 his Is due entirely to superior Judgment rather than sliced. The slow
runner realizes that he must outwit the pitcher If he wants to steal while
the speedier plajcr will take for granted that his speed will carry him
through This Is a gravo mistake, nnd made by manj. With n good sj'stem
between the pitcher ami catcher, and bath working well together, It Is almost
impossible to steal a base, except In the ase of a wild throw, and these are
becoming less frequent each jcar and this makes It doubly nccessar.v for
the base runners to watch the pitcher when In the act of stealing a base.
