Sydney. July 12. The pp. ullar acci

occurred at 5 p. m. on Friday at the

the four-masted American bnrkrntlnu

attended by loss of life or oen per

btought her fiom Natal to Sydney for
the purpose of docking, and on nrrhal
here made the neeesary arrangements
with the Moil's Dock ",mnnj. On
Friday afternoon the Lshalna wrni
floated Into the dock wit1) th tide, be
tween noon nnd 1 p. rn. The pumps
were shortly aftenaic tt to woik
pumping the water out of the dock, and
by 4 p. m. the keel of tho vi'sierl settled
on to tho bilge blocks. Mn weie then
set to work shoring up the ship In or
der to keep her In an ur right position
after the water had been pumped out
As the shoring timbers took the weight,
It wns noticed that the hid a list to
stai board, but. as the foreman 'of the
dock, Captain Gordon, tubtequently ex
plained, this was not such an unusual
circumstance ns to ghe rise to rtny
alarm. The list seems to hac caused
some apprehension, however. In the
mind of Captain Carlstn, wno, after
tecral minutes uneasln'ts. Bpoke, he
says, to the dock people about It. On

booms over to the rort tld", and to
swing the jards round In order to ic

afterwards, the captain wye, he was
startled to hear a loud and ominous
creaking noise, apparently under tho
rssel, A second later there was a m
rles of terrific crashing and rending
sounds, as the gient hull or the ship
settled oer to starboard, draining the
side of the dock as It fell, and cat rylng
away the vessel's side tunings with the
force of the Impact. The crew at onio
escaped as best they coulj from their
somewhat perilous position, while tint
dock workmen, attracted by the noise
of the capsize, ran to do what was pos

of the dock to be opened, and the water.
rushing In, had the veel lighted and
