PATRIOTIC REMARKS AT
OAIIU SUPERVISORS MEETING
8CHOOLS .AND HOSPITALS ARE
EVIDENCE OF DEGREE OF
PUBLIC SPIRIT IN THE
COMMUNITY.
John A. Hughes, appearing before
U10 Supervisors last night, spoko as
fellows on the schools and hospitals:
Mr. Chairman and ucntlcmen of tho
Hoard' of Supervisors: I cravo your
Indulgence for a few moments this
evening to make a few remarks on
tho needs and requirements of our
public 'schools and of tho urgent ne
cessity for providing a home for tho
sick and destltuto poor, tho ono a
place for nourishing the body, tho
other to Imprdvo tho mind; tho ono
raises the Intellectual structuro upon
wnicn rests our civilization, tho other
cheers and consoles the last hours of
tne prnictoci, or restores him to health,
and the busy walk of life.
Schools and hospitals aro tho hall,
marks of our civilization. They aro
the foundation and corner stono of our
intellectual progress, they aro tho key.
stono of tho arch, tho cap of tho col
umn, that crowns tho noblest Institutions-
raised by American genius.
A Jealous regard for their efficiency
and high standing Is the sign of pat
riotic duty and civic pride. A disre
gard for their welfare Is Indicative of
minds ripo for tho seeds of degeneracy
and decay, ,
As citizens of this great Republic
our schools and hospitals should bo
our constant caro. They are tho es
sentials and necessities of our civiliza
tion. As compared with them all oth
er public utilities arc mcro luxuries or
of little moment.

To the Insurance Public
of the Territory of Hawaii
GREETING!
Hivlnn heen'aooolnted to the nosltton of District Superinten
dent, for the Territory of Hav.aU, by the Mutual Life Insurance
r.omnonv of New York, we have ODened offices In Honolulu, and
will take ormal charge of the Company'a business March first,
after which date all payments of Premium by policy holders, the
novmtnt of Death Claims and Matured Endowments are to be
rnoHo at h Comnanv's offl:e at 932 and 938 Fort street.
The modern contracts Issued by the Mutual Life, offer larger
guarantees than do those of other companies.
THE COMPANY FINANCIALLY UNASSAILABLE,
Remember that, with all the reckless talk In the newspapers
about syndicates and salaries and subsidiary companies, the secur.
Itles of the Mutual Life have not been criticised nor their perfect
af.i., nueitlnned. The Investments of the Company were an open
book In the hands of the Investigating Committee; every loan,
every bond, every security of any description was beforo them
four hundred and fifty millions and more; and not a single Item
,. ji.rrrHHori nrt not a slntile Investment of . any sort was
lad rlnnklflll.
&. u.r h Mutual Life Is still the stronoest financial Insti
tution In the world, with a reserve $36,000,000 larger than that of
any other existing company, and wim a contingent bu"
fund, or accumulated profits, of $75,000,000 In excess of Its legal
llal.lim.ta f
it t.'.nii tnir. a It has always been, that the Mutual Life
has paid more TO policyholders, and holds more today FOR pol-
iruhoiriera than anv otner comoanv in in. nvn.. i.mit -v.-..
hunrfrrrf mltilnna a Hata has the Comosnv disbursed to Its mem
bers and their beneficiaries, making, with what It still holds for
them, nearly one hundred millions more than It has received from
them ......
You are cordially Invited to examine our contracts and satlsfv
yourself that we Guarantee more In Insurance protection to your
family and estate and to return more In cash as an Investment for
your old age than do other companies.
Yours for Dullness,
W. A. WANN,
District Superintendent
Office with Trent Co., 932 and 938 Fort St, Honolulu, T. H.
