A party ot eleven joung men from
that plantation had planned to mako a
trip up tho new trail leading along the
now ctectrlc line to seo tho country
and Incidentally to catch a few goats
If tbey should come across any.
Joo d'Ormellcs, who was ono of the
party. In company with Joo da Costa,
roused two goals, which they followed
down a trail nearly overgrown with
lantana and lending along tho river.
This trail, running on tho faco of a
very steep hill under overhanging
trees, wns very slippery in some places,
and just abovo tho only pool thcro Is
In the river Joo d'Ormellcs slipped and
slid down tho four or five feet .separat
ing the trail from the pall. There wus
nothing to stop the fall and ho disap
peared almost Instantly from view of
his horror-stricken friend. Tho latter
Immediately gavo alarm and tho rest
of the party soon arrived and tried to
recover tho body, but In vain and tis
night was coming on they returned lo
l.lhue. where they notified the authori
ties of tho accident.
Sheriff Hire, accompanied hy thrto
policemen and n number of tho friends
of the young man, stnrted out at four
o clock the next morning to recovet
tho body. After a long march up tho'
river, for stretches with only the river
bed passable, they arrived at tho pool,
which Is situated In a deep gorgo thick
ly overhung with trees. Mr. Hlco had
a couple of long poles cut to which
hooks from tho lantana bushes were
fastened and the pool dragged with tho
result that the body was soon recov
