Judge Parsons' charge was clear and
sound as to the duty of Jailors and
guards. Being presumably guided by
tho evidence presented, his remarks
were considered favorable to the de
fense and when tho Jury retired It 'wan
not thought possible that more than
ten minutes would bo occupied In se
curing a verdict. But there were some
of the Jurors who had rather decided
Ideas as to tho manner of treating
criminals, as well as the quality and
quantity, of food furnished and as they
could not sec where tho officials had
kept within tho law they persistently
voted for conviction for six hours,
Judge Humphrey of Chicago has
won a reward of merit from the cor

A garbage crematory which cost tho
Territory several thousand dollars is
lying Idle, originally closed, we be
lieve, on account of lack of Territorial
funds, This now represents an Invost.
ment that Is rusting out. The County
having taken over' the garbago service,
Is burning tho rubbish on various
dumps. This Is tho old scheme before
the construction ot the elaborate and
not inexpcnslvo crematory.
From the taxpayers' standpoint. It Is
not good business to allow this crema
tory to gradually decay, as It Is bound
to do If left Idle. It at least represents
an expento of Interest on the original
Investment. The taxpayer cannot look
with Indifference on a technical squab
