KINO ST. 0 Oil Steamer Ordered To Await For Instructions There Is rather more than a posst hlllty of the oil steamer RosccraiiH go ing to the assistance of the Mongolia A cable was received Inst night from the owners of the ltosrcrans, direct ing tho captain to del her over to Cap tain Mctcalf the cable and towing ap paratus of the oil steamer, and to await further orders. An It Is becoming dally more appar ent that the Mongolia Is In a very dan gerous position, tho 1'aclflc Mall hm been making strenuous efforts to get more assistance for getting her off the reef. It was rumored last night that tho Hoiccruiis might he added to the rescuing fleet. Inquiry ut the offices ot llackfcld & Co. elicited the informa tion that up to noon today It had not been learned whether or not tho Ho cecrnnts could hu secured, but there, teems to ho a general Impression that slut may bo obtained. The Rosecrans would bo a most val uable, ship In the execution of the kind of work to be done. Sho Is equipped with what Is probably the best table und towing gear of uny vessel In the Pacific. This will certainly he avail' ublo, oven 'should tho Rosecrans her self not go to Midway, but she could probably render ns great nld In tho salving operations as uny, vessel In the fleet, should It be decided that she Is to assist In tho active work. Tho Rosecrans was scheduled to leave today or tomorrow for the Co.it.t, having In tow the ship Marion Chll cott. The ship is not yet ready to leave and probably will not be before tomorrow. In en Be the Rosecrans does not go to Midway, sho will tow the Marlon Chllcott as scheduled. Tim cable ship Heitoier Is to get away for Midway tomorrow afternoon. Some of the upparutus used in the salving of the Manchuria Is still in Walmnnalo Hay, but the last anchor that the Restorer Is to take with her was brought In tody. A big anchor was being unloaded fiom tho Man churia this morning and put aboard tho Restorer, together with a lot ot other apparatus, boilers, etc Captain I'illsbury, Captain Metralf's assistant, U to go with his chief to aid In the work. It has been a question as to whether the Governmuut lug Manning would he sent to the assistance of the Mon golla, but last night Captain Joyucti leeelved orders to remain here ami eland by tho Sheridan. In case bad weather should develop the Manulug might be greatly needed here. Pears are entertained that tho ty phoon experienced on tho China const may have u bad effect on the Mon golia in her exposed position. Al though the typhoon was not felt at Midway, It Is thought that tho resulting swells might reach that far and pos sibly cause damage to tho vessel. There seems to bo considerable dif ference of opinion as to the real posi tion of tho Mongolia on the reef. Cable dispatches state that she s on the reef off tho south breakers, but tho charts do not show uny south breakers. Cap lulu 1'lltz of the Iwulanl, who Is prob ably us well acquainted with the condi tions at Midway as any one hero says ho does not see how the Mongolia can possibly bo on tho south side of tho entrance, The entranco to tho harbor, as ho explains It, Is on the west side. The Mongolia would have been coming down from thu northwest. Shu would likely havo passed ten miles or nioro to the north of Ocean Island and headed directly for the light on Sand Island, which It. the island within tho encircling reef, on which the ctatlon Is located. How ever, In this direction, she could not approach within less than three mlliy of tho light, tho reef extending out that dlstanco. Captain I'lltz Is of tho opinion that she must havo struck on tho rocks near the north breaker, Instead of tho south, though this, he says, Is only a surmise on his part. The waters around Midway, he says, are extremely dangerous, and for uuy vessel to get Inside the reef, It would he necessary for her to wind and twist about through the tortuous and norrow channels 'between tho coral rocks to the south pf Seward Roads, which Is the entrance to the reef. The reef Is exposedfund It does not seem probable that Captain Porter would allow his vessel to run onto It there. Captain I'lltz considers the position of tho Mongolia on tho reef ns a very dangerous one, especially on view o: the fact that-two of her holds arc full ot water. The swells are very high, and there Is no telling how long tho vessel can lemuln on tho reef without receiving dangerous Injuries. An important addition to the Mon golia's rescuing licet is the launch Brothers, which Is to he taken on 'thu Restorer. The Brothers did splendid work in the salving ot tho Manchuria and proved ot great value to those in charge of tho operations. It lb ex pected that sho will be of even great er assistance In tho work of salving tho Mongolia. Though small, the Brothers Is a very seaworthy croft, and can stand a lot of rough work. Sho will be of especial valuo In the shoal wntcrs thoro In carrying passen gers back and forth, laying anchors, etc. mHXi& A Good Rain Coat always comes in handy.
