Captain Porter Tells
How Liner Was
Rescued
Captain Porter, of the Mongolia,
when nsked about llio conduct of the
Japanese training Bhlp Ancgawa at
Midway and her leaving the passenger
steamer to her fate, declines to say any
thing. Ho says that ho li In a position
which precludes his making any re
marks which might be derogatory to
the Japanese, and nsks that ho be ex
cused from sayeag an) thing on the sub
ject. ll docs nay, however, that the Jap
anese vessel did not render any as
sistance and that she wcut oft and lelt
the Mongolia on the reef. Ho also
states that be offered to supply the
Anegawa with coal so that she could
remain.
Concerning the manner In which
tho Mongolia ran ashore and the way
In which she was Moated, Captain Por
ter makes an Interesting statement.
"We made Midway light." he said, at
6:50 Saturday evening. The ship was
stopped and blue lights sent up. They
were answered by Hashes fiom tb
thoro us If a boat were coming off. We
were going slow, but couldn't seo thj
reef. The vessel went aground nt
10.27. At once we tried to back, but
1 found that the vessel was muklns
water In number 3 hold. I ordered the
cargo carried from forward nft, In
hope of lightening her by the bow suf
ficiently so that she would come off, but
this did not have Hie desired result.
No cargo was ncttlsoned until the next
day, when wo threw over about tOU
tons.
