Waves Break Entirely
Over The Staunch
Vessel
Aflcr n trip of tho roughest weather
that tho vessel has mot with In tho
last two years, tho Matson liner Hllo
n Inn, Captain Johnson, arrived here
early this morning. Tho vessel was
tossed and thrown back tho wholo
toyago down by furious head winds
and mountainous head seas, and so
strong were they that at times tho
ship had all sho could do to hold her
lioso to tho course.
Tho first day out from San Fran
Cisco was comparatively smooth along'
side of what was coming, et tho
weather was by no means calm. The
second day tho Btorm commenced
and n mighty storm It was, too which
did not let up or ceaso the rest of tho
way. There was ono sea that went
clear over tho sternmast. Tho slgnir
icanco of this can hardly be grasped
unless tho Hllonlan has been seen.
Her mainmast Is not Bhort by any
means, and tho fnct that tho waves
were so vast that they not only piled
all over tho vessel, but also complete
ly Binothercd her at times and flung
thrmsclU'g entirely over her high
masts, will give somo Idea ot tho
anger of old Ncputune on this occa
sion. Tho smokestack ot tho Hllonlon,
though Its original color was dark red,
has assumed a graylBh huo from tho
coating of salt that It has received.
It wns a poor trip for tho passen
gers for they were forced to remain
below tho greater part of the voyage.
Tho first day out from Frisco and tho
last two beforo arrh Ing hero wero tho
only ones that they felt at all safe on
deck. But those who wcro not Blck
enjoyed themselves In the saloons, for
Purser Charles Drew Is a royal enter
tainer, and looked after his charges
splendidly. Captain Johnson says that
the trip Is tho roughest ono ho has ox
pcilcnccd In tho last two cars. This
menns n good deal for the genial cap
tain has been on tho sea the greater
part of the time.
Tho Hllonlan carried 22 cabin pas
sengers, 14 steerago and ono stowaway
for this port. Sho also had 1S00 tons
of freight, mostly merchandise, and a
runabout automobllo for Ocorgo Ross.
They sighted tho Nevadan last Mon
day and tho Buford tho day following.
