appear to bo doing well, all being

On To Howell's Place
Leaving Anderson's, wo rndo on to

to Mr, Howell's place on the Hawaii
an-American Hubb'or Plantation.
Hero again we found a table spread
with good things to eut, and sal down
to u lunch that seemed to hit exactly
the rlgnt spot. During tfie course of

received from Anderson's, saying
thnt Mott-Smlth hud arrived, nnd
thnt he was u turkey, too. This
caused great relief in tho bosom of
the anxious Secretary, who had been
afraid he might turn out to be a
duck.
Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester were nt
this place, a I bo, their own homo not
being ready to receive them jet. Mrs.
Sylvester arrived cm tho Cluudlne hint
week, Mr. Sylvester Is. manager of

tion, which Is taking tho place of the
old Nnhlkii sugar plantation. On

pressed the greatest confidence in tho
ultimate prosperity of the rubber in
dustry. They both cultivate, and
the growth of some of tliu trees is
leinarkable.
The Hawaiian-American planta
tion contains the original rubber
tiee, set out ionic years ago by Mr.
Howell. It Is now cry large und
much-scarred, ns It Is the show tree
ami Is tnpped by nil the visitors who
come to the place. It still )lelds
rubber freely, however, refuting the
picdlulons of some thnt the tre;s
will cease to. yield nfter n few jenrs.

Improve Landing
superintendent Marston Campbell
was taken down to see the landing,
nnd tho rest of us trailed along. A
new engine hns just been Installed
to run the derrick, und this will
greatly lighten the work, though the
lauding Is still u dangerous one. The

the ragged rocky walls with force
enough to smash any boat ever
built.
We left Nuhlkti about - p. in. and
started for Keannc, whero wo woie
to spend the night. A bridge on the
lower road had been washed out and
we were obliged to take to tne I

On Mountain Trails
This was tho first time most of the
party had ever ridden one of the
mountain trails, nnd they wcro a
little skittish about it at llrst. Hut
nobody thought ot this long. One
toon becomes used to It, nnd forgets
et cry thing else In the beauty of the
Econo spread out below. At each of
the countless turns In tho trail some
new picture presents itself. And al
ways there Is the sea, with the shore
fringed with Its lines ot white break
ers. Often one could. If ho were
mlcldally Inclined, Jump oft tho
trail and be picked up In pieces over
ft thousand feet below.
And along tho trnil run the great
ditch, ut tho head of which we start
ed In. On the first twelve miles of
this great enterprUo aver halt a mil
lion dollars was spent. It Is one of
the great engineering accomplish
ments of Hawaii, conveying water
Irom Koolau Blxty miles over Into

Kahulul.
Most ot the riders weio pretty
sore by the time they came down oft
the trail nnd onto tho wagon road
leading to Keanae. All day In the
Middle, tho latter halt ot it oil a
mountain trail, Is not tho easiest
thing In tho world for n tenderfoot,
and only tho Governor nnd tho Scc-
ictary have done any riding for a
long time before this trip. The trou

and his mule Maud are worthy of u
rhnptcr by themselves.
Worth Aiken, Poobah!
Charge of the commissariat was
given to Commissioner Pratt before
tho party left Honolulu, and he In
turn paBsed It on to his Sub-agent,
Worth Aiken. A bettor choice cou'd
not- have been made. Mr. Aiken np
pears to know every old woman, ev
ery village patriarch, every )oung
wnhlne, and every chubby baby nn
Maul and they nil know him. He
Joined tho party nt Kahulul und has
been In charge of arrangements over
since. When he Is not In the Buddie,
he seems to be at the telephone most
of the time arranging ahead for
kaukau and bods. Incidentally, Mr.
Aiken Is collector of the port, tnx

etery, and a little of everything else.
