The mangoes are really very fine.
This morning I went through the
piluclpal markot nnd had n loolc at
them. The prices range from thirty
to fifty cents per dozen.
Major Aheam has nrrunged for mo
to go with a nnttro In the llureau of
Agriculture, to a province where the
best mangoes come from; we go on
Tuesday, the 2Cth, nnd I thlnfc wo
uro on tho right way to secure tho
best there is. So fur us I can see,
there is nothing to hinder me finish

In addition to the mango plants I
will bring back a number of seeds
packed in a peculiar way that I
think will savo their vitality. I will
also mnko u collection of other seeds,

Hon. S. M. Damon, Honolulu.
Dear Sir: Mall goes tomorrow
for Honolulu, so I take the oppor
tunity to report progress on our
mango venture I have secured of
mangoes planted from tho following
places: Ucpaug, Ilelucan, Cavite,
Santa Maria, and Itallgwag. Thcso
wcro nil beautiful fruits nnd I um
persuaded that we hnvo tho best
there Is. There nro three varieties
of mangoes here Caraboa, I'ico and
l'ahutan. Tho first Is the best and
most popular kind, it's long In bhape
without .any distinct depression In
the middle, tho stone Is flat, and tho
flesh firm iind Jreo from fibre. Ilco
Is a good fruit of good flavor, not
qnllo so fleshy as Caraboa. l'ahutan
I hnvo not seen, but am trying to get
hold of it; tho stono of that 1 am
told is large and thoxllcsh thin; In
the markets It Is held of no account.
It's a later mango, coming In In July,
and August. Caraboa Is tho kind of
which I have planted most, though
1 hnvo used a number of l'lco. Tho
fruits were very carefully selected
and If wo can land tho plants In good
condition In Honolulu wo will have
bomethlng to look forward to. The
celebrated Cohu mangoes nro the
Curubon, which tho natives forco by
a method of their own and brills in
to the Manila markot in January;
('ley get for them sometimes as high
a price as $5 'gold per dozen, .
Thd incessant rains for tho first
ten days I was hero retarded tho
germination of tho seeds somewhat.
At this date vo have 70 plants nnd
ns it bt HI lacks 17 days of tho date
the China Is duo to sail, I am In
hopes we will hnvo our full comple

and tho others In chnrgo here havo
done nil they can to help mo along.
With kind regards, I am.
