LAND COMMISSIONER
Has No Time To Attend
To Laysan Island
Lease
The I) u 1 1 e 1 1 n 1ms received the
following communication from King
Sclilcmmcr ot Laysan Island:
Honolulu, T. II., July 31, 1908. '
Editor Evening U u 1 1 e 1 1 n :
As I nm n subscriber or yours I hope
you will allow me to have some spaco
In your paper.
Seeing In last night's paper that
Land Commissioner l'ratt will Boon
leave to see Secretary Garfield, I hope
Unit when he docs see htm that ho
will seo him for the benefit ot tho
poor man as well as for the rich, as
In Honolulu he seems to have no tlmo
to talk to the poor man but has lots
to Bparo to talk to tho rich.
It Is now about fourteen days ago
that I went one morning at eight
o'clock to tho I.nnd Oftlee where I
met Mr. Tucker, whom I asked to neo
Mr. l'ratt. Ho went in to tell Mr.
Pratt. Coming out, he said, "All
right, Jinx, Mr. Pratt will sec you ns
soon as he Is through with Honor
able Cooper." I waited there at least
twenty minutes. Hearing anil seeing
both of them laughing and chatting
all tho while.
After tho expiration of that time
Mr. Cooper and Mr. Tucker went out
together. Mr. Tucker, beforo ho left,
told ono of the llnwallnn men In tho
office to tell Mr. Pratt that Mr.
Schlenitner was waiting.
To my surprise, the man came
back and told me that Mr. Pratt
could not see me this morning as he
wnB too busy with the mull.
I was all taken back and asked tho
man whether Mr. Prntt really said
so. Tho man said "Yes."
Tho man stated that Mr. Pratt
would see me some tlmo In the nftor
noon. Hut as I have a wife and ten
children to support and have been
without work for the last four
months, I cannot afford to spend car-
faro as freely ns Mr. l'ratt, who
holds an honorable position.
This was the fourth or fifth time
that I wished to apply fur tho renew
al of the lease of Laysan Island, In
all cases I was sent oft with prom
ises and the last time, ns you sec, Mr.
Prutt had no time ns he was busy
with tho mall.
Hero the cry goes "Immigrants!
Immigrants!" Wh1 not givo the men
In this country, who have been here
for a number ot years and have help
ed in building up ifcls government, a
show first before raising tho cry "Im
migrants!" If you can solvo this problem for
me, I wish you would. If not, I will
try to boIvo It for you if you will
sond one ot your best reporters to
H60 Qullck Avenue.
Yours truly,
MAX SCHLEMMER.

1904 Four-Cylinder
Stevens - Duryea
MODEL X
IN BRINGING OUT THIS NEW MODEL we do not in any way retract any claims that
we have made for the six-cylinder car which we are firmly convinced is the highest
type of automobile construction. In response to a demand for a larger, roomier car
- than our 20-horsep6wer,'4-cylirider Model R. and more moderate in price than our
Light Six, we have produced the Model Z. This model supplies a demand for a four-cylinder
car a little larger and more powerful than the Model R, which has been discontinued.
The owner of th; Model Z can feel that the well-known features of the Model R are
embodied in his car, together with the advantages of more room and power. In brief, the
Model X is an enlargement and refinement of the Model B, representing the nrnt advanc
ed ideas in automobile designs, together with Stevent-Duryea construction and workman
ship, which have been proven absolutely correct
THE UNIT POWER PLANT
and
THREE - POINT SUPPORT
This construction, which has made the name "STEVENS-DURYEA" synonymous with
motor car efficiency, is retained. STEVENS-DURYEA cars were built on correct principles
in the beginning, and at no time have any radical changes been made in their design. -
