Jos. Steward, a well-known resi
dent, committed .suicide iestcnlav af
ternoon' nt 'his home In 'tluckle lane
by taking strychnine. He had been
brooding for some time past and had
been threatening to tuko his own
lire.
Steward bought the poison ester
day forenoon at the Chambers drus
shire, signing the record book in ac
cordance with law. Ha returned ut
about 3 p. ni. and lockod himself In
the bathroom, where he took some of
the poison. He then went to his
bedroom, telling his wife that he
felt ill. She 'phoned for a phjslclan,
and when she returned her husband
told her thnt he had taken poison,
and asked her to Bend for Captain
Parker In order that ho might make
a statement to him. Soon nfterwnrt's
ho died without suffering the ago
nies usual in such cases.
Steward was born in Castlerey
street, Auckland, Dec. 1G, 1849, so
that he was Just one day over Ifly
nine years old, He leaves a widow
and nine children. The latter me
